Over the next few months, readers will be seeing another Austin writing for the sports pages.
Ben Austin, a senior at Houlton High School and the son of Scott and Tara Austin, will be covering local sporting events as part of an internship at the Houlton Pioneer Times.
“I really enjoy writing, and have been involved in local sports all of my life, so putting them together seems to make the most sense,” he said.
Though not quite sure what influenced his career choice, Austin began thinking about the possibility of journalism.
“I have always liked to write, but never really realized until the last two years that I would be able to do it for a living,” Austin said. “I like being able to take everyday ideas and write them how I see them.”
Austin is looking at attending the New England School Of Communications, University of Maine Orono or Emerson College and going into either communications or journalism, or possibly both as a major and a minor.
“I had planned on going in a completely different direction, but last year in my English class, I really began to get into what I wrote and put time into it,” he said. “I decided to look into journalism and sign up
for the class at school, which so far has been one of my favorite classes in my high school career.”
Austin is active in Houlton sports, playing soccer, basketball and baseball. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and recently has signed up for the photography club. Austin has also been mentoring a third-grade student in his free time.
