PRESQUE ISLE – The Beaver boys overtook Greater Houlton Christian Academy at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Monday night to post their first win of the season, 66-57.

“We’ve been so close so many times this year and for one reason or another came up short, so this is good for the team,” said head coach Randy Norsworthy. “It was a fun game to watch.”
The first half foul record looked like Washburn might not go on to claim the victory. Both team leaders, Nick McIntosh and Connor Fitzpatrick tallied up four fouls in the opening 16 minutes, which forced Norsworthy to go deeper into his bench than usual. However, McIntosh hung on until six seconds remained on the clock and other players stepped with confidence onto the floorboards.
“The bleachers were pretty full,” commented Norsworthy, “and because the media was there. That was one of the keys.”
Four Washburn athletes contributed to the conquering offense. McIntosh again led his team with 22 points. Fitzpatrick and Brian Campbell both added another 12 points. Cody Frank topped off the double-digit baskets with 13 points including two three-pointers.
The GHCA girls kept their undefeated title on the UMPI Owl courts to serve Washburn their second loss of the season in a heart-pumping Class D matchup, 38-36. The Beavers slid up to two points over the Eagles by the end of the third quarter, but GHCA’s Sarah Riopel couldn’t miss three shots in the waning seconds of the game to maintain the perfect record.
Beaver Kelsee McLaughlin put in the WDHS team-high of 11 points, and freshman Rebecca Campbell contributed two three-pointers.
Eagles oust WDHS
The Washburn boys came from behind to tie with Limestone at the half, 22-22, last Thursday on their home court, but the Eagles went on to win 55-36.
Eagle Matt Enman had a dead-aim outside with four three-pointers added up for a game high 29 points. Fellow Eagle Matt Beaulieu pitched in another 10 points for Limestone.
Washburn’s Frank also had four three-pointers to the team-high 14 points on the Beaver side.
Tigers take on Limestone
The Tigers outshot the Eagles in last Friday’s Class D girls’ scrimmage at Limestone. Fort Fairfield’s Whitney Clark pulled out all the stops for FFHS to put up two three-pointers toward a 20-point total.
Eagles Peers, Stacy Bernier and Allen all had a hand in the Limestone effort. Peers cranked up a three-pointer to a 14 point team-high. Allen and Bernier both added 10 points for Limestone.
The Fort Fairfield led by only one at the buzzer of the first quarter, 15-14, last Thursday night at FFHS against the Madawaska Owls.
However, the Tiger squad soon expanded the lead and took the victory, 67-38.
Austin Dufour scored 14 points in the Fort Fairfield column, and Travis Noyes put in another 10 points.
The Fort Fairfield girls struggled from behind as Hodgdon took a first-quarter lead and went on to victory, 48-44, at Fort Fairfield last Wednesday.
Tiger Whitney Clark put up the team-high 15 points, and Brooke Beaulieu added another 10 points against the Hawks.
