HOULTON – A generous crowd turned out for the opening reception of the fourth Annual Seeds of Creativity student art show at the Blue Moon Gallery last Friday. The Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project (SACAP) sponsored the event.

ADMIRING ARTWORKS – Grace Malone, a first grader from the Mill Pond School, and her art teacher Stacy Ramsey look over some paintings and drawings by other elementary school students.

The exhibit features a diverse and colorful collection, from local pre-K students’ crayon drawings to experimental works by seniors in high school. Nearly all schools in the southern Aroostook region are well represented in the show, as well as several local home-schooled students. Organizers attributed the large collection to increased popularity in the event and to the commitment of local art teachers.
“We were sent all kinds of stuff,” said Audrey Zimmerman, executive director of SACAP, “It’s very lively.”
A wide array of works are on display in the gallery, from paintings and drawings, to sculpture, paper arts and mixed media, among many others. Intricately painted Ukrainian eggs are on display from Hodgdon High School art students. The Houlton Southside School visual arts class has a display case of sculptures featured in the gallery. The sculptures, which are explorations of shape and form, are made from a wooden base, a twisted wire with a nylon stocking pulled over it, and paint.
Home-schooled ninth-graders Summer Turner and Chelsea Green have sculptures on display in the Visions store window. Green’s piece is a paper-mâché fire dragon named Zimry, and Turner’s creation is a paper-mâché and mixed media mushroom fairy house.
“I kind of have this thing with fairies and the mystical,” Turner explained.
Turner plans to pursue art in college as well.
“People tell me I should do fashion; I make my own clothes,” Turner said, “[Art] is my life.”
The Seeds of Creativity student art show will be on display at the Blue Moon Gallery in the Visions Shop at 66 Main Street, Market Squaure, Houlton until May 24. For more information call SACAP at 532-9119.
