Seventh grade honors women in history
HOULTON – Erynne Howland, Brittany Keber, Lucas Flewelling, Dan Swallow and Emily Polchies, won last Tuesday’s 2008 Women in History Pageant for their depiction of Maria Tallchief, an American ballerina. The 2007 pageant winners for their depiction of Glenn Close, relinquished their crown at the close of last Tuesday’s event.

MARIE CURIE – Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in a skit featured during last Tuesday’s Women in History Pageant, starring the Houlton Junior High seventh grade class.
The pageant features the Houlton Junior High seventh grade, who choose an introduction song, conduct an interview, and write and perform a poem and skit in honor of their woman from history.

HELEN KELLER– Anne Sullivan teaches Helen Keller to understand the meaning of the word “water,” during a skit from the Women in History Pageant. Students were required to choose an introduction song, conduct an interview, and write a poem and a skit in honor of their chosen woman from history.
Women portrayed in the pageant included: Betsy Ross, Queen Victoria, Clara Barton, Nellie Bly, Marie Curie, Emily Post, Isadora Duncan, Helen Keller, Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Parker, Lillian Gish, Mother Teresa, Abigail Van Buren, Maria Tallchief, Olympia Snowe, Christa McAuliffe, Jane Pauley, Katarina Witt, Samantha Smith, and Monica Seles.

MONICA SELES – Tennis champion Monica Seles was a crowd favorite during the seventh grade’s Women in History Pageant. The two-part skit included Seles first beating Steffi Graf to become “World No. 1” in tennis, then her on-court attack when a spectator stabbed her in the back.
