ASHLAND – A job fair held over the weekend provided an opportunity for recently-displaced mill workers and others looking for employment to meet with a number of employers representing various businesses.
“A job fair was held at the Ashland Community School on Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Torry Eaton, director of Career Center Employment Services for the Aroostook County Action Program based in Presque Isle.
The event was designed to help bring those with positions to fill together with people in need of a job.
“This job fair was organized for all of the dislocated workers in the Ashland area but all job seekers were encouraged to attend,” said Eaton.
In all, nine employers – local and businesses outside Aroostook County – made the trek to Ashland to take part in the fair.
“A number of employers from various fields took part. Participants included: Huber, Lane Construction, Hancock Lumber, Tempo, The Aroostook Medical Center, McCain Foods, Women Unlimited, Wal-Mart and the U.S. Border Control,” said Eaton.
Despite the weather, Eaton was pleased with the turnout.
“There were over 50 people who stopped by looking for work,” said Eaton. “We had a good turnout of people checking out what was available. Employers were on hand to answer questions and provide information to prospective employees. Overall, I think the fair was a success.”
