Rensselaer, NY – Donald A. Tompkins, 89, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Resurrection Nursing Home in Castleton, NY. He was born in Houlton, Maine and has lived in the capitol region area of New York since 1968.
    Mr. Tompkins was employed and awarded as an expert mechanic for Albany International, HL Gage, Albany Dodge and Armory Garage in Houlton, Maine. He was a US Army veteran of WWII attaining the rank of Sergeant serving in the Battle of Bulge receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button and Expert Badge.
    Loving husband of 63 years to Georgette Caron Tompkins of Rensselaer, NY; father of Dawn (James) LaMountain of Wynantskill, NY and Sandra (Thomas) Sanchez of Nassau, NY; proud grandfather of James (Beth) LaMountain, Thomas (Noelle) Sanchez and David (Kristin) Sanchez; adoring great- grandfather of Heather, James and Nicole LaMountain and Gabrielle and Hunter Sanchez and Dylan Fletcher; son of the late Murray and Minnie Grant Tompkins; brother of Mildred Gillis of Limerick, Maine and the late Mary Farrar, Helen Cunningham, Nellie Goodall, Leitha Brewer, Theodore, Merrill and Lee Tompkins.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral will be at the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer, NY, Thursday morning at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-8 pm. Interment will be in New Rural Cemetery, East Greenbush.
