The qualifying round for the Houlton Community Golf Course Club Championship was played last Saturday, with 16 of the top scorers eligible for the championship flight and other finishers were placed in their divisions according to scores. Match play will determine the champion and division winners.
The big news was a competitive course record, and, to no ones’ surprise, it was Porter Gervais, who fired a magnificent 65. Porter and his brother Ian (who shot a great 69) are outstanding young players whom I am sure we will hear more from in the future.
Men’s Twilight League play had a holiday, as the Monday evening action was off due to the Fourth of July.
The Ladies’ Twilight League play is on each Tuesday and the July 5 action was a game shamble. Winners, tying for first, were the teams of Linda Holmes, Cathy Belyea and Traci Storti and Misty Marino, Marion Collins and Cheryl Quint. Second place went to Harriet Gray, Lori Holmes and Kerry Putnam.
As promised, here are the results of the Houlton High School alumni golf scramble.
The first-place team was Ryan Bushey, Steve Nelson, Caleb and Chris Bell; second place, Tom Brown, Bill Colbath, Fred Putnam and Gary Severson; third place, Ray Mailman, Pam Mailman, Peewee Gallop and Karen Gallop; and fourth place, Beth Hunt, Jake Hunt, Jamie Hunt and Ryan Dee.
Close to the pin winner on hole three was Gary Severson.
I had the pleasure last week of playing with my vacationing son from Los Angeles. Houlton and Houlton Community Golf Course got very high ratings in his book. Maybe we should all count our blessings for living in Aroostook.
Everyone of the Houlton High alumni I spoke with just love to get home and enjoy our area. It is easy to decry our long and tough winters, but a sunny day in June, July and August in Houlton, Maine at the golf course is priceless.
