No place like Houlton

To the editor:
Sometimes people wonder why someone would choose to live in Houlton; it’s the end of the 95, jobs are scarce and what is there to do up here anyways? I will tell you one of the reasons I choose to live here. The community.
On April 14th, Chris and Terry Beaton’s sons, Terry and Travis, our families, along with friends organized and held a benefit supper “A Heart of Gold.” Chris is currently seeking treatment for ovarian cancer which came back at the end of 2011.
The support of the community was unbelievable. Everyone eagerly bought tickets on the homemade quilt made by relatives of Chris and others offered eagerly to help sell tickets. A beauty basket was graciously donated by Lisa’s Hair Design where they also sold tickets for that raffle. Dave Cunha of County Yankee always outdoes himself, not only did he donate all the hot dogs and containers to put extras in, he also donated two legend passes to a Celtic game later on in April for auction. Coca-Cola donated over 196 cans of soda and almost every business we asked for donations for the auction gladly said ‘yes.’ Wesleyan Church as well as Smith and Wesson offered to make desserts for the benefit. People offered to help in any way they could; from baking beans, bread and making potato salad (potatoes donated by Michael Fitzpatrick) to offering to help clean up afterward.
Cancer seems to be invading our small town. All we can do is support the families and be there in their time of need. I hope you will all agree; there is no place like Houlton.
