Pioneer Broadband expands fiber service

HOULTON — Pioneer Broadband has announced the completion of a new “Fiber to the Home” (FTTH) network in Big Lake Township. This new network will provide high speed Internet service for private citizens and businesses via fiber optic lines.

The new fiber lines are connected to Pioneer’s system via Maine Fiber Company’s Three Ring Binder network, which was completed in 2012.
High Speed Internet service will be available to approximately 40 full-time residences and many seasonal visitors. With nominal speeds of 30Mpbs/2Mpbs, it is anticipated that some seasonal visitors will be able to become full time residents. Also, many students will be able to study via online classes, saving time and travel. Typical monthly fees will be $44.95/month and higher speeds are also available.
Pioneer Broadband is pleased to collaborate with the Sunrise County Economic Council and the ConnectME Authority for funding this project. The Sunrise County Economic Council administers the Washington County Unorganized Township TIF program.
The ConnectME Authority is an independent component unit of Maine state government whose mission is to facilitate the universal availability of broadband Internet service to all Mainers and help them understand the valuable role it can play in enriching their lives and helping their communities and businesses. The Big Lake Township project should be complete by Sept. 30.
For years Pioneer’s motto has been, “Crossing the Digital Divide.” This new fiber optic network is one more major “crossing” in the overall network improvement for Pioneer’s Internet customers in rural Maine.
