The Aroostook Association of the United Church of Christ held its fall meeting at the Whittier Congregational Church in Island Falls, on Sept. 15. Following registration and period of fellowship, lay Pastor John Stevens led a short worship service.

Moderator Candy McKellar then called the business meeting to order. Reports were given and it was noted that two southern counties voted to become members of the association and that from now on it will be known as the Katahdin Association and that the spring meeting will be held in Lincoln. The meeting was adjourned at 5 p.m. and church members served supper in the vestry.
I have been chatting with fellow swimmer at Vacationland Estates, John White, and he was telling me about the great park, called the Merrill Millstream Park, which is located off Route 212 in the Smyrna Mills -Merrill area. It has been very active all summer. The park has a committee made up of local people and they make the plans for the activities and are helped by many volunteers to keep the park clean and the grass mowed.
The last summer outing was held on Aug. 30 and a volunteer drove to the coast and came back loaded down with lobsters, which were cooked at the park during the day of fun and games. There were also many vintage cars on display, which drew a good crowd and that along with the lobsters, hot dogs and chips and soda made for a very successful end of the season.
This winter, they will continue to have cookouts and other events as weather permits and I understand the volunteers are ready.
I have quite a few more birds around now the weather is cooler and I also have had the deer family just about every day, grazing all over my back lawn, plus the one good-sized buck which shows up every day or two to wander about grazing and one morning he was at the end of my driveway eating the apples that have fallen from the tree there. I have a nice small garden under one of my feeders full of voluntary sunflowers from the seeds dropped there by the birds during the winter and spring. They look bright and pretty there and during the warm days had bumblebees crawling over them. My one cherry tomato plant is still producing tomatoes and I cover it at night in case of frost.
