 100 Years Ago – June 7, 1916

 Scholarship — The $100 scholarship which is awarded to the boy taking the best rank at R.C.I. by Colby College, has been awarded to Robert Wilkins who is in the graduating class. Mr. Wilkins is the son of Geo. E. Wilkins, and is one of the brightest scholars ever graduated from Houlton’s schools, and his many friends will extend congratulations.

 Violinist — The friends of Miss Marion Cleveland will be interested to know that she has been assigned a prominent part in the musical program at Mount Ida School Commencement exercises which takes place this week.

 

75 Years Ago – June 5, 1941

 Phone service — Preparation for the change to dial telephone service here is now under way, and by next week a sizable crew will be located here to start replacing the present instruments with the dial phones. The approximately 2,400 phones will be removed and stations rewired. Paul A. Sawyer of Bangor will be in charge of the work.

 Bootmaker — In this streamlined age of mass production and hurry-up methods it isn’t too frequently that one comes across a craftsman of the old school. There is one such in Houlton. Nearly half a century ago he began making boots by hand. He still makes them by hand and his name is Silas E. Heughins.

 

50 Years Ago – June 8, 1966

 We have a winner! — Fred Johnson is the winner of the $795 RCA color television and stereo set that was being offered by Kyanize paints through its Houlton dealer, Gene Brown, retail manager of Fogg’s Hardware.

 Soap box derby — Eleven-year-old Wayne Miller and his family will be in Akron, Ohio, Aug. 6 for the national Soap Box Derby championships. Wayne won the state title Saturday in Brewer in a contest sponsored by the Bangor Daily News and Chevrolet. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Halbert Miller.

 

25 Years Ago – June 5, 1991

 Dollars for Scholars — The Houlton-Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars chapter has announced a total amount of $33,635 will be awarded this year to graduating seniors at the two high schools during last chapel ceremonies. Houlton students will receive at their graduation a total amount of $12,860.

 Congratulations — Student Council members of Hodgdon High School presented a banner to T&S Market in Hodgdon, congratulating Tony and Sally Michaud on their recent grand opening. The store was rebuilt after fire destroyed the original.
