A bomb threat was received at Limestone Community School, which led to an evacuation of students on Monday morning, and brought a number of local police and emergency personnel to the school. According to Limestone Police Chief Stacey Mahan, the police department received a call at around 9:40 a.m. from LCS Assistant Principal Leland Caron, detailing a possible bomb threat. Administration evacuated the building, sending students next door to the Veterans’ Memorial Gym, as local law enforcement arrived on the scene to check over the building.
Maine State Police and the Limestone Fire Department were dispatched to the scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department.
Fire Chief Paul Durepo arrived on the scene with several volunteer firefighters aiding in traffic control as well as with the search of the building.
Crown Ambulance stood by in the event of a medical emergency.
Trooper Fred Thomas and Trooper Shawn Whalen of the Maine State Police arrived on the scene along with Whalen’s bomb sniffing dog, Bailey. A thorough inspection of the building was performed.
Meanwhile Limestone Police Officer Dan Gahagan helped at the Veterans’ Memorial Gym making sure that no one left the area, or returned to the school building. Gahagan also assisted with parents looking for their children.
Ultimately no explosive device was found anywhere on the premises, and students returned to class, two hours later, according to Superintendent Frank McElwain.
McElwain noted that although it was unfortunate students had missed class during those two hours, the response from local law enforcement and firemen had been impressive.
“I thought things went very well with local law enforcement and firemen working together. It was impressive how they came to our assistance,” said McElwain.
Police are still investigating to determine from whom the bomb threat came.
“The investigation is ongoing, but we have a pretty good lead,” said Mahan.
