Caribou tennis splits with ’Cats

The opening volleys of the tennis season have been served for the Presque Isle and Caribou tennis teams as the two County rivals met for the first time last week. The Wildcat boys handily beat Caribou 5-0, while the Viking girls blanked Presque Isle 5-0.

On Monday, the Caribou squads were scheduled to face Houlton, but those matches were postponed due to rain.

Caribou girls 5, Presque Isle 0 — Saturday’s balmy tennis match was a far cry from the match played Thursday in Caribou for the contest between the Vikings and Wildcats. Played under cold, blustery conditions, with winds that wreaked havoc on most lob shots, the Viking girls (1-0) had no trouble with Presque Isle. Presque Isle’s second doubles tandem of Dicker and Melissa Carson were the only Wildcats able to win individual matches against talented Caribou.
“I knew Caribou would be one of our toughest competitors and they certainly demonstrated that,” coach Bearden said. “At least we won two games. Hopefully we will give them a better match next time.”
The individual results, with Wildcats listed first, were: in singles, Ireland lost to Jenna Selander  (1-0), 0-8; Madelyn Carson lost to Laura Collins (1-0), 0-8; and Wolland (1-1) lost to Carlee Pinette (1-0), 0-8.
In doubles, Michaud and Bisht lost to Missy Nadeau (1-0) and Liz Barbosa (1-0), 0-8; and Dicker and Melissa Carson lost to Ashley Richards (1-0) and Alexa Massey (1-0), 2-8.
Presque Isle boys 5, Caribou 0 — At Caribou Thursday, the Wildcats got their first win of the season, at the expense of the Vikings (0-1). The individual results, with Wildcats listed first, were: in singles, Mathers beat Nick Willey (0-1), 8-2; Shaw beat Ezra Duplissie-Cyr (0-1), 8-5; and Cawley bested Jon Ouellette (0-1), 8-5.
In doubles, Emerson Mendieta-Castro and Gilson beat Matt Coty (0-1) and Phil Smith (0-1), 8-5; and Picard (2-0) and Osman Mendieta-Castro defeated Tyler Willey (0-1) and Zac Gorence (0-1), 8-1.
“I was pleased with the way the guys played during this match,” coach Picard said. “Yes the wind was terrible, but both teams had to deal with it, and it’s a common thing to have to play matches during poor weather in the County. We simply played smart and constant which allowed for this 5-0 win.”
