• H. W. Edwards started today on a business trip to Boston and Providence.
• Miss Evelyn Fisher gave a very pleasant buckboard ride to her young lady friends in honor of Miss Helen S. Briggs who left Tuesday to attend the State Normal School in Bridgewater, Mass.
100 Years Ago-Sept. 4, 1913
• Baptist Church 50th anniversary — Members of the Baptist church and their friends to the number of nearly three hundred gathered at the P. of H. dining rooms last Friday for supper and social hour. The day marked the fiftieth anniversary of the church which was organized August 29, 1863. The present year marks the completion of twelve years of service by the present pastor, Rev. T. J. Ramsdell, D. D.
• Caribou improvements — A few years ago, the Republican mentioned a few of the wants and needs of Caribou. The library has been established, the trotting park is being put in proper condition, a town clock has been installed, the electric road is an established fact with trains operating daily and our sidewalks are improved. There still remains, however, the much-needed, up-to-date fire alarm system.

• Of local interest — The firm of Bishop and Babbin has recently added two new trucks to their equipment. Mrs. Gunhild Fisher, who is attending the Golden School of Beauty Culture in Portland, arrived home last week for a ten-days vacation. Miss Elouise Larssen, R. N., is working at the Cary Memorial Hospital substituting for another nurse who is on her vacation. Miss Viola Sands is working for Mrs. Oscar Peterson at Colby.
• Latest in lightweight eyewear — Optical lenses are now made of a new plastic material which, under test, has proven more transparent than glass and weighs about half as much. From its use, revolutionary changes in the lens-making industry are expected.

• In the military — Norris L. Jacques, yeoman third class USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leontine Jacques of Vaughn Street, Caribou, is stationed at the U. S. Naval Photographic Interpretation Center, Washington, D.C. Marine Staff sergeant Edward E. D. Carroll, son of Mrs. Robert F. Carroll of Caribou, recently reported for duty with the Second Marine Aircraft Wing at the Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N. C.
• Three complete nurses’ training — Miss Ruth McGrath and Mrs. Charlotte Hardacker of Caribou and Miss Janice Boyles of Washburn will be among those to receive diplomas and pins at the 17th commencement exercises of the Maine School of Practical Nursing in Presque Isle on Friday. Exercises will be held at the chapel of Northeastern Maine Vocational Institute at 8 p.m.

• Fitness is focus at Hazardous Waist — In a program supported by Cary Medical Center and the Cary Sports Medicine Committee, the Hazardous Waist Treatment Center, under the direction of “Waist Engineer” Mike Mendonca of Caribou Parks and Recreation Department, is ready to meet the needs of the community by developing individual exercise programs and educating participants to make nutritional changes
• McElwee runs winning season — The girls cross-country track team at Caribou High School continued to dominate with its third consecutive win of the season with a 6-0 win over Ashland; and Viking Darcie McElwee recorded her third consecutive victory, covering the 2.8-mile course in just 18:50. “She’s placed first in every meet this year, including defeating the defending county champ twice,” said coach Jim Carter.
