To the editor:
We all know that is these troubled times that transportation costs have been a rubber ball — low one day, next day high. As I am sure most know that Aroostook County Regional Transportation System has a bus come out our way one day a week; not everyone in Ashland lives on their schedule.
It is then purposed that the town use a SAD 32 transport to help those on fixed income and the elderly get to the city of Presque isle and The Aroostook Medical Center on a three-day schedule Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I would further offer this proposal to Oxbow, Portage Lake, Eagle Lake and Fort Kent town councils so that all of you can come together with a feasible transportation solution were the citizens pay a $1.50 for use of the transport which would pay for a driver and the diesel and upkeep. Each town would set up specific bus stops at elderly and disabled housing and along specific route and cross roads. These bus stops would include a simple building with a bench seat and a payphone which I think Fairpoint would be glad to provide.
With the rising energy costs and the elderly and disabled on fixed income, an affordable and convenient transportation service is in need now more than ever.
