Just get it done!

To the editor:
I am a longtime supporter of the Presque Isle Animal Shelter and hope to continue to be one. In direct donations, fund-raisers and daily collection of cans and bottles — in just about every way possible — I’ve helped our local shelter because they do a great job handling creatures in our vicinity who need care.

Several years ago, almost a decade, I learned of pre-fab, large cat enclosures for the outside where felines may have an opportunity to get out of their tiny cages and taste a little freedom for a while. These are not very expensive, approximately $1,000, and so I informed the management of the shelter of their existence. I even brought in all the information for three or four different styles.
Between then and now, practically the entire cost of the enclosure has been promised from three supporters of the shelter, including myself. Therefore, the hurdle of cost has been cleared. Yet I just learned, in a recent board meeting, this project was still put on hold. Why?
The dogs have had a beautiful outside run for several years now. For this, I am glad. They, too, deserve a place to experience freedom. But what is the holdup for the cat enclosure?
This project should have been ready to be put up this spring. The cats should be able to be out enjoying the facility by now. Cats who have to be holed up in their tiny cages for many months become un-adoptable due to behavior changes.
As a cat lover I am tired of waiting! The time is now! Just get it done!
I do NOT want to withdraw my support, but I will do so if this project doesn’t happen immediately. I already have another organization picked out who treats cats as they should be — with some freedom to move around. I urge others of you who love all animals to call the shelter and urge them to just get it done.
Again, I don’t wish to withdraw my support, but I will. Cats deserve a taste of freedom every bit as much as dogs.
