Little Known Holidays
National Senior Citizens Day is celebrated Aug. 21 every year. According to holidayinsights.com, this day was set aside to honor our elderly population. All are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribution of elderly people to home, family and society.
In his Presidential Proclamation, President Ronald Reagan said, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.” On Aug. 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be Aug. 21.
On National Senior Citizens Day, consider taking the time to visit with some of our local senior citizens, show our appreciation for them, or, if you are able, dedicate time volunteering to work with the elderly. Since this holiday falls on a Friday this year, why not offer to provide transportation for some senior citizens to the luncheon held at the Mapleton Methodist Church? Several of our local elderly enjoy a delicious meal each week, and have an opportunity to visit with others they may not see very often.
McHatten Family Reunion
Descendents of Robert A. McHatten and Mary Hamilton and James Porter and Matilda McHatten will gather together Saturday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Castle Hill Grange Hall to celebrate their family reunion. A potluck meal is scheduled for noon.
Please bring a picnic style lunch and a dish to share.
The family is asking those planning to attend to bring any old documents, correspondence, or photographs you may have. There may be equipment available to copy shared photographs and documents, so those providing original copies may keep them, if so desired. Family members are also asked to come prepared to discuss any research that may have been completed recently, regardless of how small the information received. Most of our records obtained have been small projects that do add up and look impressive when compiled. If you are a descendent/cousin/family friend, you are invited to attend this celebration. Please e-mail Roxanne McHatten Gura at rmchatten@sbcglobal.net with any questions or comments.

NOAH RYON TAYLOR of Alabama was certainly the center of attention recently as he met his great-great-grandmother for the first time. The family symbolically laid their hands on him in love and welcome.
