Schools to honor veterans

 

 

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11, but several local schools will celebrate local vets a day early with special events.

At Southern Aroostook Community School in Dyer Brook, the public is encouraged and cordially invited to come to the Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. A special ceremony will be held to honor local veterans and all veterans who have sacrificed to protect this country’s freedoms.

The Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Caribou will host a special Veterans Day ceremony Friday, Nov. 11, and invites the public to attend.

Firefighters group endorses Carpenter

HOULTON, Maine — Democratic Senate candidate Mike Carpenter of Houlton has received the endorsement of the Professional Fire Fighters of Maine (PFFM) for his support of firefighters and EMTs throughout the state.

“I am proud to receive the support of firefighters and EMTs in Aroostook County and throughout Maine,” said Carpenter. “They deserve recognition for putting themselves in harm’s way in difficult circumstances.”

Salvation Army seeks kettle ringers

HOULTON, Maine — The Salvation Army is hoping that its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign will mean a brighter holiday season for struggling men, women and children in Maine.

Officials from the Houlton Salvation Army have also sent out notices that the group is now accepting Christmas applications through Dec. 9, 2016. The Houlton office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to noon.

Those applying for assistance must bring proof of everyone in the household (license or birth certificates, insurance IDs); proof of income; proof of expenses; and clothing sizes and wish list for children 18 and younger.
