My husband Jim and I had no idea our second Brittany bird dog would be our ticket into an entire dog world in Maine.

From the time that Kim Guerrette Michaud of Mapleton was growing up in Presque Isle, her family ensured that community involvement was an important part of her everyday life.

Medical science has shown that the short days and lack of sunlight in northern latitudes can have negative physical and emotional effects on some people. In fact, seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is treated by doctors and therapists as a real and potentially life-threatening condition.

Whether she is tending to horses on her farm in Nashville Plantation, helping students prepare for college or leading a trip to Quebec City, Sarah Brooks has most enjoyed using her passions for the outdoors, education and history to give back to the Aroostook County communities that raised her.

Carl Michaud has worked at the Central Aroostook Association for 10 years and has seen the organization’s growth in serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
