Happy new year

New Year’s should be a reflective time for us all. It’s a brand-new year and the start of hopefully a happy and healthy 2023. It goes without saying that the past couple of years have been an extreme challenge as we have all dealt with the pandemic and the cost of everything going through the roof. But I still believe that we are better off than many in this world.

Make way for the zoomies

Nearly anyone who has ever had puppies or dogs can relate to “The Zoomies.” The zoomies are defined as those sudden bursts of pent-up energy that cause dogs to run at breakneck speeds back and forth or around and around, or sometimes in a tight little circle.

’Tis the season

Twinkling lights, sparkly tinsel, brightly colored garland, and delicate ornaments — what’s not to love about holiday decorations? My previous kitty, “Willie,” was so interested anytime the bow box came out of the closet. Once the tree was up he couldn’t get enough of poking his nose in boxes, pulling out tissue paper — and he LOVED ribbon.

Ark Animal Sanctuary – Week of December 14, 2022

Late yesterday there was a knock on the door. It was a young lady looking for help for a cat she and her friend had been given and asked to dispose of. The cat was in desperate need of medical attention. She had already been declined for assistance at the first place she went. I said yes, of course, and I told her I would get her a carrier.

Life with Odie

This crazy dog lady is back with a new story. I know, that’s all I seem to write about is dogs, dogs, dogs. What can I say? Small dogs, big dogs, all dogs — I love them all. I love all animals but dogs are my favorite. I have been a dog lover since I was a kid. There is nothing like being loved by a dog and them loving you back.

All cats must scratch

As we reflect on our Thanksgiving celebrations, all of us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society couldn’t be more thankful for the many supporters that we have, who do so much for the animals and our organization.

Everyone who enjoys the company of a dog knows that sometimes dogs have strange behaviors. They may arrive in your life with the behaviors already in place, or perhaps they are adopted as a puppy and develop a behavior young.

Man’s best friend

Happy fall to you all. It has been a super beautiful one so far. The harvest has gone well and the temperatures have remained warm, so enjoy these rare days because before long we will be into the winter months, and we all know what that means.

Halloween safety for your pets

What a beautiful fall we are having. We hope you and your furry friends have been able to go on long walks enjoying all these “bonus days.” Even though the pandemic has put an unexpected cramp in most of our lives, we are all starting to get a glimpse of our past “normal” life reappearing. There will definitely be the usual ghosts, goblins and superheroes out on the prowl on Halloween night.

Spay/neuter seems like a simple concept right? Spaying and neutering cuts down on the number of unwanted pets that in many cases end up at shelters or even worse are left to fend for themselves out in the elements.

Hunting safety tips for pets

We are now into the hunting season, whether it is with guns or bows, hunting for birds, bear, rabbits, deer or any wild animal.

When pets go missing

Over the months we have seen so many pets that are missing and lost. We are grateful that our Facebook page is a wonderful tool for getting the word out about these pets that have wandered off.

Good Companions

Dogs are good companions for people of all ages, especially so if you’re older. Pretty much all the studies show that older people who live with pets do better.

Porsche and I recently made that very familiar trip to Florenceville, New Brunswick to see a veterinarian. Sadly, Porsche did not make the trip back.

A ‘Toast’ update

Many of you have been asking about our super popular “Toast to the Animals” celebration. After several COVID-19 cancellations and not being able to host this great fundraiser, we are finally ready to celebrate the animals once again and help support the Central Aroostook Humane Society.

Shy Pets?

There are so many types of personalities when it comes to pets. “Shy” is a word that some folks use to describe cats and dogs who are fearful. Many times this “shyness” is a fear of strangers, but it can also be fear of being picked up and handled, new places or sudden movements or noises.
