PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Seniors Achieving Greater Education, or SAGE, celebrated the beginning of their fall classes with a kick-off event on Sept. 10 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
SAGE offers classes for people older than 50 who want to continue their education. “There are no admission requirements, no exams and no grades — only the joy of learning with others,” Susanne Sandusky, Vice Chair of SAGE, wrote about the program.
This semester, members can have their pick from several classes — from water fitness to the study of Victorian-era hats. For the first time this year, SAGE is also offering a class through Zoom, an online video conferencing program which will allow students to participate remotely.
Some classes are expected to go beyond traditional classroom learning, too. A class on the Civil War will take students on a trolley ride around Presque Isle to visit Civil War monuments.
In December, the Estey House will host a Victorian Christmas — a private party for SAGE members who will get a tour of the Vera Estey House on Third Street in Presque Isle. The holiday event will feature a scavenger hunt based on “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”
Many instructors for SAGE are former teachers from the area or simply passionate about a study or activity they want to share with others. The program this fall will include instruction from various local historians, artists, teachers and people who are passionate about a topic and want to share their interest with others.
Members can register for classes up until Sept. 22 and people can purchase a membership for $25, although scholarships are available, Sandusky said. This year, the program is offering free bus tickets on the Presque Isle route to members who need help getting to and from their classes.
