PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Fire crews acted fast to put out an early morning fire that broke out at the Presque Isle landfill, causing heavy smoke in the area.

Presque Isle fire crews were called out around 4:10 a.m. and the fire was out by 10:30 a.m. The cause of the fire has not been determined, according to Capt. Kyle Bartley of the Presque Isle Fire Department.

“It took awhile to extinguish the fire because of the area we were working in,” Bartley said.

There was no loss of property and no injuries were reported. Fire crews from Mapleton, Easton, and Caribou assisted Presque Isle. Maine Forest Service helped control the fire as well.

There will be no investigation because the fire was outside with no damage to buildings, Bartley said.
