Hockey splits games

    ORONO, Maine – The Presque Isle varsity hockey team got a taste of play on the Alfond Arena ice at the University of Maine as they traveled downstate over the weekend to take on second-ranked Orono.
     Despite outshooting the Red Riots, the Wildcats suffered a 5-2 loss. Orono took an early 2-0 lead in the first period and added a shorthanded goal in the second before Brandon Daigle got Presque Isle on the board with assists from Ben McPherson and Spencer Deschene.
Orono netted two more goals to take a 5-1 lead by the second intermission.
Presque Isle blanked the Red Riots in the final period. Daigle added his second goal of the game off assists from Deschene and Greg Cyr, but Orono goalies Jared Bussell and David Eugley combined to keep the Wildcats from climbing back and Orono picked up the win to improve to 13-2-1.
Sean Babin led Orono with three goals, and Dan Ohno and Mark Cloutier each added a tally for the Red Riots.
Ethan Hill made 18 saves in goal for Presque Isle and the Wildcats outshot Orono 25-23.
Thursday, Presque Isle picked up a 6-3 win over Houlton/Hodgdon. The Wildcats took an early 2-1 lead and both teams added a goal in the second period. Presque Isle opened things up in the final period scoring three goals to Houlton/Hodgdon’s one for the final margin.
Scoring for the visiting Wildcats were Daigle and Ben McPherson with two goals each and Sean Flanagin and Brennen Shaw with one each. Dylan Collins, McPherson, Deschene, Daigle and Cyr all picked up assists.
Presque Isle moves to 9-5-1 on the season and into fourth place in Eastern Maine Class B hockey.
The Wildcats host Brewer Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final home game of the season.
