Municipalities preparing for annual meetings

Municipal elections in Washburn will be held on Monday, March 19, with the polls open at the Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Those running for the one three-year term available on the Washburn Town Council include: Keith Brown, Tom Bolstridge, Daren Churchill and Brad Bragg. There are three individuals running for two three-year terms on the Board of Directors of SAD 45 and they include: Cary Schumacher, Greg Doak and Allyson Bragdon.
There will also be a Liquor Referendum Question on the March 19 ballot, dealing with the sale of hard liquor in Washburn on days other than Sunday.
Absentee ballots are now available at the Town Office for the municipal election; for further information on voting, phone 455-8485 from 7 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m.
The annual Washburn Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 20,  at 7 p.m. at the high school. All town residents are invited to attend, and copies of the town report should be available during the week of March 12.
Twelve area residents attended a special public hearing held at the Civic Center on Wednesday, Feb. 28, to inform residents on seven new ordinances for the town of Washburn. They include the following: Litter Ordinance, Animal Control Ordinance, Controlling Nudity in Business Ordinance, Land Use Ordinance,  No Smoking Ordinance, Solid Waste and Recycling Haulers Ordinance, and Building Code Ordinance. Town Manager Andrea Powers read the purpose of each. After allowing time for review, she asked for input and questions on each of the ordinances. Following this public meeting, the ordinances will be included in the annual warrant and voted on during the upcoming annual Town Meeting.
The next scheduled Town Council meeting has been set for Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center.
Perham and Wade
municipal notes
The Planning Board of Perham meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Perham Town Hall. Their next scheduled meeting will be on Tuesday, March 6, and will include a special habitat workshop.
The Perham Planning Board presents Open Discussion Night on Salmon Brook Lake. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at the Perham Town Hall and is open to all residents.
Perham has one three-year term open on the Board of Selectmen. Incumbent Woody Doody is currently running for re-election.
The Perham municipal elections will be held on Monday, March 19, at the Perham Town Office. Polls will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Perham Town Hall. The annual Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. at the Town Office.
Wade will hold their annual Town Meeting on Monday, March 19, at the Dunn Town Advent Christian Church at 7 p.m. Wade takes nominations from the floor and votes the night of the Town Meeting. Annual re-elections are held for Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Treasurer and School Board Directors. There is currently one opening for a member of the Wade Board of Selection, with incumbent Andy White running for re-election.

Rotary ‘wheels’
Members of the Washburn Rotary are into the planning phase of their annual Rotary Auction which is scheduled for Saturday, April 28. It will be held at the high school, starting with appetizers served at 5 p.m. followed by their famous turkey and roast beef supper.
The annual auction will follow the supper and auction items are needed. Anyone wishing to donate to the auction may contact Auction Chairperson Peggy Bugbee at764-8424 or contact any Rotarian. This is a major fund-raiser for the Washburn club and all monies earned go back into the community, including helping the Boy and Girl Scouts, as well as SAD 45 scholarships and other community projects.
The Rotary also has some 2007 calendars still available. They are called A Look Back In Time and feature lots of historic photos of Washburn, Perham and Wade. The cover for March 2007 shows the Malcolm Holts IGA store, a horse-drawn ‘school bus’ and the Perham Grange Hall. There is also a paragraph denoting some interesting historical facts about the town of Perham. Each month of the calendar features separate photos and local historical information. The cost for the calendars is $10 and can be purchased from any Rotarian or at White’s Exxon.
Events and reminders
TOPS meet each Monday at the Trail Runners clubhouse. For further information, contact Birdina Cochran at 566-8353.
There is Bingo each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the snowmobile clubhouse, and Stew Night is each Friday starting at 5 p.m., with breakfast served each Saturday and Sunday starting at 6 a.m.
Friday nights at the Trail Runners Snowmobile clubhouse on Station Road in Washburn includes some great country music. Donations are accepted with the proceeds going towards helping pay for the club’s new groomer.
Washburn’s Paul Clayton and Friends play at the K of C building in Presque Isle on the second and last Saturday of each month. Oscar Dow Post 48 of the American Legion holds their meetings on the third Tuesday of each month, with the next meeting scheduled for March 20.

The Girl Scout cookies are in, and all orders will likely be delivered by March 10. There may also be booth sales in the area. Cooking with seniors
The Washburn seniors’ group and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Eatwell Nutrition Program will be meeting on Friday, March 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Washburn Rec Center. The March meeting will focus on March being National Nutrition Month. The group’s theme for the month is Go for the Greens and they’ll be using a variety of fresh vegetables to help with the 5-a-day for better heath project.
Library ‘bookmarks’
Coming events for the Washburn library include the Women, Work and Community meeting at the library from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, and on Wednesday, March 21. The Reminiscence Group will also meet at the library on Wednesday, March 7, starting at 7 p.m.
On Monday, March 12, there will be Story Time starting at 5:30 p.m. The theme for this month will be weather. On Wednesday, March 14, there will be a Board of Trustees meeting held at the library at 7 p.m. The current t: Ellie Snyder, Harold Leonard, Bill Forbes, Sue Fuller, Gary Cole, Karen Milton, Cheryle Mattowitz and Linda Bourgoine.
The library’s Middle School Reading Group held their monthly meeting, and the book discussed was “Peter Pan” by J. M. Barrie. There was lots of excitement and lively discussions on the book and all attending enjoyed pizza and punch. Participants included Darby Koch, Rebecca Campbell, Desiraie Rediker, Kala Farley, Kolby Koch, Lindsey Blackstone and Dakota Koch. On Monday, March 26, the Middle School Reading Group will meet at the library at 5 p.m. The book to be under discussion is “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
The library is currently selling tickets for a St. Patrick’s Day raffle to be held on Saturday, March 17. The prize is a queen-size quilt made by Carolyn Hayden. Tickets are $1 each or five for $6 and can be purchased at the library, Washburn Food Mart or Katahdin Trust Bank where the quilt is currently on display. All proceeds will go for Washburn library programming.

A very special event will be held on Saturday, March 10, at the library. There will be an Honorary Trustee Ceremony and Tea held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The library Board of Trustees are bestowing honorary status to former Librarian Barbara Porter and former Board member Joyce Davis. Barbara Porter spent many years on the library Board and was the Washburn librarian for 19 years. Joyce Davis was a member of the Board of Trustees for over 40 years. All are welcome to join the library trustees as they honor these ladies and their many contributions to the library.
Rec Center Schedule
Special congratulations go out to Rebecca Campbell and Carmen Bragg for their efforts in the regional Hot Shot competition held in Caribou. Both girls came in first in their age divisions, qualifying them to participate at the state competition.
There will be cross country skiing on Wednesday, March 7, from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. On Thursday, March 8, there will be indoor soccer held at the elementary school. Grades 5 – 6 will play from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and grades 7 – 8 will play from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Monday, March 12, there will be cross country skiing from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. There will be men’s basketball from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
On Tuesday, March 13, there will be indoor soccer at the elementary school for grades 3 – 4 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Project Graduation
Senior high school students still have a few jars of locally made honey, now selling for the reduced cost of $3 each at Griffin One Stop.
A date for some special fund-raising events will be scheduled in the very near future. The fun night will include a special dinner along with Senior Service and Silent Auctions to be held at the high school. There will also be an auction for a new Old Town Canoe Otter Kayak, and tickets for this are $5 each for adults and $3 for children.
There will be a Ms. Washburn Pageant featuring several Washburn high senior boys on Saturday, March 31, and a special Bingo Night on April 27 at the Trail Runners clubhouse. Anyone wishing information on the events may contact any committee member or senior student.
Dental Health Month
The  students at WDES recently took part in events surrounding the 2007 National Children’s Dental Health Month. The theme this year was Fight Tooth Decay 24/7.
Students in Ms. Fitpatrick’s and Mrs. Castonguay’s classes wrote to the Tooth Fairy and had an opportunity to read their letters and responses back from the well-known fairy. The students seemed fascinated that she lives in a tooth castle and decorates the place with all their shiny, loose teeth that she has collected over the years.
Carolyn Kimball, community education specialist from ACAP, will be at the school on Tuesday, March 20, to give second graders a lesson on dental sealants. On Friday, March 23, Lucy Morin, a dental hygienist, will be at the school placing the dental sealants on the six-year molars of grade 2 and 3 students.
This program is offered to the students through funding from the Oral Health Program, Division of Community Health, and is an awesome opportunity to keep students’ teeth healthy.
The following students will have their posters submitted to the Poster Contest sponsored by the ACAP Oral Health Education Program: Grades 1 – 2: Cameron Hartford, Casey Bragg and Andrew Gumprecht. Grades 3 – 4: Cameron Bragg, Mykayla Espling and Brooke Arruda. Grades 5 – 6: Caitlyn Roix and Carmen Bragg.
Junior Exhibition
The Washburn District High School Class of 2008 will present their Junior Exhibition on Friday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. Speakers for the evening will be Wendy Ketch, Kelsey King, David Roy, Brian Campbell, Kristen Goupile and Kelly O’Donnell. Admission to the program will be $2. The audience will also have an opportunity to submit their People’s Choice Award by giving a $1 donation to the class.
