To the editor:
I learned with deep regret that Mr. Larry Harrison was terminated in February 2007. What really bothers me is the reason for his termination. Mr. Harrison was terminated because the Red Cross set a monetary limit for him to collect from businesses and citizens of our county within a certain timeframe. Is this the way we ask for donations? We then hear the Red Cross say, “We are sorry but because you have not donated the expected amount we must terminate a valued employee.” What kind of charitable organization sets a dollar amount on doing your job?
As a citizen and contributor to your organization I question your practices. I thought the Red Cross was here to assist people who needed your services. Is the termination of a valued employee who worked for you 14 years one of your services? I read many articles about Mr. Harrison and his work for the Red Cross and know that he gave more than 100 percent of his time. Is this how we reward someone for their years of dedication?
We are a county of giving people and there are so many worthwhile charities that we now must divide our donations among them. Your organization does many great things but the termination of Mr. Harrison was not one of them. Mr. Harrison has not only worked for the Aroostook Chapter of the American Red Cross but he is also a member in good standing of the Washburn Rotary Club and has been the Scout leader of Troop 177 for over 20 years. I wish you well Mr. Harrison and know that you will be a great asset to your next employer.
