MADAWASKA LAKE, Maine — Snowy Mountain Trails is hosting a Ski Pond Hockey game on Saturday, April 14. The event will take place from 8-11 a.m. on Madawaska Lake.
The event was originally slated for April 7, but was rescheduled due to the recent snowfall. Although the trails around the lake will be great for skiing during the games, the club wanted to wait until the surface of the pond had a hard crust for better playing conditions.
This is the third year the event has been held, but it is the most formal ski pond hockey game that has been held. Last year there were a total of 17 people who came to play and the players were split into two teams. When people weren’t playing, they were skiing around the lake or helping out with lunch.
Since the game is played with floor hockey sticks and balls, the game can be quite fast-paced. Half of the trick with playing hockey on skis is to figure out how to get the ball, but not get tangled up in all of the skis chasing after it.
This year, registration is by team, with four people per team allowed on the “ice” at one time. The entry fee is $20 per team, which will help cover the costs of keeping the trails open for the Snowy Mountain Trails Club. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate.
Non-alcoholic drinks are provided and grills will be available, although participants need to bring their own for preparation. If any participants have floor hockey sticks, they are encouraged to bring them.
If interested, please register with Max Saenger at 227-2791, or by e-mail at max@mainewsc.org, and confirm Friday, April 13. All participants will meet at Stan’s prior to the start of the games.
Please register in advance as there are limited moose steaks available.
