Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday night, May 18, at Central
Aroostook High School. A delicious meal of prime rib, baked haddock, baked potatoes, mixed vegetables, salad, brownies and ice cream was prepared and served by the CAHS staff. Scott Carlin of the Mars Hill IGA did a fantastic job with the beef!
There were over 70 in attendance, including members, spouses, past presidents, Rotarians from Florenceville, New Brunswick and Presque Isle (our original sponsoring club) as well as representatives from many of the businesses that have supported many of the events and projects undertaken by the club over the past 50 years.
A special PowerPoint slide show was presented showing many of the happenings at the club’s events.
It was prepared by the Entrepreneurship class at CAHS taught by Rotarian Stephen Dame.
A video history was presented by Roger Shaw which highlighted clips from the Rotary’s 30th anniversary celebration in 1987, when five Rotarians were named Paul Harris Fellows. Roger’s presentation was edited by SAD 42 Media Specialist Betsy York.
Roger Shaw was the evening’s emcee, Fred Boyd led the group in the national anthems of Canada and the U.S. as well as singing the Aroostook County song. Closing remarks were given by Steve Hitchcock, who has recently returned to Mars Hill and is a new member of the Mars Hill Rotary Club.
Special recognition was given to Milton Adelman. Milt has been a member of the Mars Hill Rotary Club since its inception on April 26, 1957. He was one of the 36 charter members of the club and remains one of
the driving forces in the club. Milton extended a special birthday greeting to Pam Townsend – who has been alive as many years as Milton has been in the Mars Hill Rotary Club! Happy 50th to them both!!
Rotary District 7810 Governor Harold Moore presented a certificate to Mars Hill Rotary Club President Larry Fletcher in recognition of the club’s milestone achievement.
Weekly Rotary meeting
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill. The club welcomed Milton Adelman back from Florida.
The special speaker was Rotarian Venkat Munukutla, who showed pictures and spoke of his recent visit to the family farm in India. They raise a variety of crops, like coconut, rice, banana, sugar cane and cocoa. The coconut, banana and cocoa trees and bushes are all planted in the same area. The average temperature is 97 to 102 F – with high humidity!
Mother’s Day Brunch
The Bridgewater Historical Association’s Mother’s Day Brunch was a hit. There were several items on the menu – scrambled eggs, omelets, eggs Benedict, ham, corn, quiche and an assortment of muffins and Danish, etc. Everyone had plenty to eat. Soft music played in the background.
The BHA congratulates newly-crowned Miss Bridgewater 2007 Shelby Hallett and Little Miss Bridgewater 2007 Molly Anthony, who both attended the brunch. After brunch, the music was turned up and there were some that took to the dance floor. Miss Bridgewater led all in the Electric Slide.
Bridgewater Music Jam
Bridgewater’s music jams resumed this past Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring old-time rock ’n roll, country, oldies and standards. Regulars are Denis Gagne (BHA president) on the drums, Jann Votaw (BHA secretary) on guitar and vocals and Simon Blawej Clair on guitar and vocals.
Condolences to Jann, who missed this past week’s jam due to the death of her mother.
Trying to preserve a small town’s history is not an easy task, and the BHA thanks those who support their efforts. They hope to see everyone at their planned events.
United Methodist Women
The monthly meeting of the UMW met in the church vestry on May 14 at 1 p.m. There were 11 members and two guests present.
President Janice Footer opened the meeting by welcoming our former president, Carol Guiggey, back after having been away for the winter. President Footer then led in the Purpose Pledge and Prayer.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. Thank-you notes were received from the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the Methodist Conference and Mechuwana – the Methodist church camp – for our contributions.
Diana Ketchum presented a picture taken of the brass plaque with the inscription “Mars Hill Methodist Woman,” which is on the brick wall of the Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library. The plaque represents a
monetary gift from the UMW.
After a brief discussion, it was voted to hold the annual Trash and Treasure Sale on Saturday, June 23, in the church vestry beginning at 8 a.m.
The meeting was turned over to program Chairman Donna Brewer. She introduced Susan Mitchell, executive director, and her assistant, Autumn Creasy, of the Presque Isle Homeless Shelter. They spoke of the many types of services provided and the many people who are served by the shelter. They said they were the only shelter of this kind north of Bangor. They were presented a gift from the UMW and thanked the group for their continued support.
Elaine Bailey, who was helping with the program, had two readings – one whimsical and one a prayer. After the benediction, delicious refreshments were served by Donna and Carol.
Those attending were: Janice Footer, Joan Walsh, Diane Ketchum, Alma Smith, Frances Banks, Joan Boone, Donna Brewer, Goldie Folsom, Elaine Bailey, Carol Guiggey and Clara Hussey.

A special prayer was given for the families and friends of three individuals that have passed away
recently – Edgar Wheeler, Dot Lamson and Bertha Mersereau.
Following the flag salute and singing of “God Bless America,’ the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.
The next meeting on June 6 will feature a ‘friendship stew,’ so everyone is asked to bring a can of soup! BINGO is planned and members are asked to bring small household items to use as prizes.
