Kids mountain bike rides
Every Tuesday through Aug. 21, kids mountain bike rides will be held at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle. Bikers ages 8 and up are welcome. Call 762-6972 for more information. SAD 1 looking for soccer line runners
The SAD 1 athletic office is looking for students entering grades 2-8 to run lines during the middle school and high school soccer games this fall. If your son or daughter is interested, contact the athletic office at 764-6507.
22-mile bike race scheduled Sunday
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the PI Classic bike race on Sunday. The race begins at 10 a.m. at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. This is a 22-mile race and is open to all cyclists ages 14 and older. There is a $15 registration fee. Call 764-2545 for more information.
Canoe/kayak race planned Sept. 1 and 2
The first Aroostook River 60-Mile Canoe/Kayak Race is being planned Sept. 1 and 2. The event is being organized by Northstar Search and Rescue. The race begins at the Fish and Game Club in Ashland on Sept. 1 and proceeds 30 miles to the Presque Isle boat landing. Participants must spend the night there or somewhere in Presque Isle before the race continues Sept. 2 and ends at the boat landing area in Fort Fairfield.
Registration is $15 through Aug. 18 and $20 from Aug. 19 through the date of the race. For more information, visit  the web site http://rmichaud36.tripod.com and click on the link for the race.
Buck Construction advances to national’s
Buck Construction placed seventh in the Class D State Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament held July 20-22 in Augusta, earning a berth in the national tourney to be held in Virginia in September.
Buck’s went 4-2 in the event, losing its opener before pulling off four in a row. Bee Jay’s of Fort Kent placed 10th and also qualified for the national tournament.
Women’s mountain bike  clinic to be held Aug. 12
The Nordic Heritage Sports Club in Presque Isle will offer an all-levels mountain bike clinic for girls and women on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 1-4 p.m.
The goal of the clinic is to give riders more confidence on their bikes. Clinic participants will learn various biking skills, basic bike maintenance, and get tours of the great network of trails available to the public at the NHSC.  The clinic costs $10.
Use of the trails at NHSC for biking, walking, and winter sports is free and open to the public.  For more information about this or similar programs, call 762-6972.
Fat Tire Festival slated at NHSC in September
Nordic Heritage Sports Center will hold a Flat Tire Festival at the facility on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22.
Friday night’s activities will include a Mountain Bike Biathlon, pasta dinner and bonfire. Saturday will feature mountain bike races (cross-country and downhill) and a barbecue. Both days will include kids races and fun activities for the entire family.

Co-ed tourney  planned in Hodgdon
A co-ed softball tournament to benefit the Hodgdon High School class of 2010 will be held Aug. 10-12 at Houlton Community Park. Registration deadline is Aug. 3. The cost is $125 per team. Format played will be six males and four female on the field.
