‘Holier than Thou’ attitude

To the editor:
For weeks now, there has been a debate throughout town, throughout the pages of the Houlton Pioneer Times and even onto the internet (at both GHCA.com and the local softball league Web site) regarding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints not being allowed to enter a team into the annual GHCA invitational softball tournament.     Both sides of this debate have presented their case throughout various forms of media and through typical Houlton gossip. I feel that both sides have really bit the hand that feeds them.
I think it’s ridiculous that the potential players who wanted to put the team in from the LDS church are saying they are standing up for what they believe in and therefore they are in the right. What if (I’m not saying they are right here, but..), what IF this was GHCA standing up for what THEY believe in? What is the difference there?
It seems as though there has been a mud slinging contest going on between GHCA, it’s board members, it’s headmaster (via comments he posted on their Web site), and the church of LDS, one member in particular who posts under the handle “LawnDarts”.
Both sides are coming across as very childish and self-serving. Aren’t these people concerned they are giving their respective religious organizations a black eye? Don’t they all believe “this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”? Well, if so, their light must come from a burning pit!
I used to attend church up until about the age of 15. One thing that constantly soured me on attending any church was the “Holier Than Thou” mentality many of them seem to possess and display. It definitely seems to be displayed proudly by both sides of this little spat over the past month!
I also noticed a certain individual wrote a letter here a few weeks back. He claimed if he were running the tournament all faiths would be allowed in with open arms. He claimed he is a Christian who’s love for fellow Christians was an unbiased love. Well, Stan, are you telling me you didn’t stand outside the Military Street Baptist Church with a sign reading, “Pastor Burns Is A Preacher Of Hate”? Something to think about!
I think everyone involved in this discussion, debate, argument, whatever you wish to call it, should take a minute and think everything over. Think about what they have said. Think about how badly your comments have affected your “side”.
Better yet, look up the lyrics to “Holier Than Thou” by Metallica and read them. Then really think about it. “Is that really what I come across as?” Yes, yes it is.
