HOULTON, Maine — American Legion Post 47 on the Bangor Road in Houlton holds its regular meetings the first Sunday of every month at 1 p.m.
The post, chartered in August of 1920, carries the name of Houlton soldier Chester L. Briggs who died during World War I. Since their beginning, the post has remained active. In addition to hosting regular events, like social hours, dances and suppers, post members also play a key role in organizing Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day events, giving scholarships to local students and placing flags at soldiers’ graves in the local cemetery.
Current officers for Post 47 are: James Dunlop, commander; Craig Corbett, first vice; George Hanning, historian; Peter Roach, chaplain and Jim Burton, service officer. Auxiliary officers include: Connie Barry, president; Valerie Davenport, second vice; Shirley Smith, sergeant at arms; Nancy Smith, chaplain; Connie Saucier, historian; Betty Acott, treasurer and Kim Hardy, secretary.

On Veteran’s Day: a short ceremony will be held at Monument Park, starting at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include a salute by the rifle squad and the laying of wreaths.
