PRESQUE ISLE – Members of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club volunteered to give back to the community, recently spending a day cleaning rubbish along a section of the Fort Road.
“On Sept. 29, we struck out and found quite a few different items on the side of the road. By doing the project, we agreed to clean about a 3-mile stretch of the Fort Road,” said club member Susan Watson.
In an effort to spruce up the community, city officials came up with the idea for the Adopt a Highway program whereby individuals and groups could volunteer their time – from a few hours to a day – to clean sections of roadways in the area.
“The project is designed to beautify the community while encouraging volunteerism,” said City Manager Tom Stevens. “We wanted a program that would enhance the city and its ability to attract businesses and residents, while promoting a sense of self-worth and pride in those doing the work.”
The Kiwanis Club will receive recognition for their efforts.
“For the work we did, we will get a sign with our club’s name on it,” said Watson.
Watson said members were surprised by the amount of trash could accumulate along such a short stretch of road. Several bags were collected by the group.
“We ended up with 179 pounds of trash and over $2 in returnable cans and bottles,” she said.
Taking part in the project were: Connie Sandstrom, Cindy Flanagan, Nadean Hitchcock, Diane Green, Isaac Estey, Deb Estey, Keith Madore, Shawn Cunningham, Mike Kelle, Janet Kelle, Susan Watson, Claire Exner, Scott Estey, A.J. Cloukey and Suellen Hill. Hill served as chef for the day, preparing dinner for the group at her home. For information, contact 764-4485.
