HOULTON, Maine — Monument Lodge held an historic meeting last Wednesday concluding celebrations of Houlton 200th anniversary and commencing the lodge celebrating of its 150th anniversary in 2008.
William Boone, Grand Master of Masons in New Brunswick, was the guest speaker. He spoke on attitude and how it should effect our dealing with others.
Accompanying Boone were his Junior Grand Warden, Peter Whittaker of Harvey Station, and Vaughn Crump, Master of Woodstock Lodge No. 11 along with eight members of the lodge. The lodge welcomed five first time visitors.
Monument Lodge Master Richard Rhoda spoke briefly of the formation of the lodge in 1858. At that time charter members of the new lodge included the worshipful master, senior warden and secretary who had joined Masonry in the Woodstock lodge.
Fraternal visitations have taken place between the lodges since February 9, 1859 when the masons of Woodstock first visited in Houlton.
This was the first time a current Grand Master of New Brunswick had attended a regular meeting of Monument Lodge.
Grand Master Boone was presented with a 4-foot by 5-foot afghan decorated with symbols used in masonry as a show of Monument Lodge’s appreciation of his visit.
