Winter rec programs announced

“Take It Outside”  
     The Maine Department of Conservation and the Maine Recreation and Parks Association will cosponsor the “Take It Outside” program.
    Families, scouting groups, outing clubs, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to come enjoy the best of winter in the Maine Outdoors. This day-event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Aroostook State Park in Presque Isle. Expert cross country ski and snowshoeing instruction, and loaner equipment will be available to help enjoy all that winter has to offer and each participant will be entered to win a 2008 season state park pass.
    Other events planned for the day are sleigh rides, snowmobile rides, sliding and natural history exploration.  Cost is $5 per person. Preregistration is not needed, just meet at the Aroostook State Park and be ready for some fun winter activities.  
Girl’s cheerleading program
    The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Girls’ Cheerleading Program for girls in grades 4-6.  Registrations have been sent through the local school systems. Registration forms may be picked up at the Houlton Recreation Center, as well.
    Deadline for registration is Feb. 1. Cost is $20 for Houlton residents and $30 for non-Houlton residents.  
Girls will need to have both dark blue or black shorts and sneakers.
     The program will begin the week of Feb. 25 and run for six weeks.

Youth basketball programs
    The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for four youth basketball programs for the following age groups: 5-6 grade girls, 5-6 grade boys, 7-8 grade girls and 7-8 grade boys.
     Registrations have been distributed throughout the local school systems. Registration forms may also by picked up at the Houlton Recreation Center.
    Registration is required to participate in this program.  Deadline registration is Feb. 1.
