Food pantry meeting
There will be no supper at the Easton Kiwanis meeting on Tuesday, March 4. Instead, the local churches will meet with the Kiwanis Club at the Odd Fellows Hall at 6 p.m. that day to discuss opening a food pantry for the town of Easton and the surrounding areas. All interested people are invited.

Organizations
The Easton United Methodist Women met for their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the home of Freda Dionne. Due to the icy conditions, only four were able to attend. Devotions were held by Glenice Craig and prayer was given for those on the prayer list. The word for the month was ‘prayer.’ President Eldora Carter went over the minutes of the last meeting in the absence of Secretary Marjorie Corey. Freda reported that two baby quilts had been sold and that there were 10 more on hand as well as three large ones. Three large quilt tops are on hand to be tacked as soon as the weather allows a get-together. Community service still includes recycling, and one member drives a woman to work. A thank-you card was read from Erma Thompson and one from the Ronald McDonald House. Under new business it was voted to donate a sum of money to a family in Mars Hill who has had serious medical problems. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Those present were: Marie Hewitt, Eldora Carter, Glenice Craig and Freda Dionne. The next meeting will be with Eldora Carter with the word for the month ‘Saints’  and Freda Dionne will have devotions.
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club enjoyed a special catered luncheon on their meeting day, Thursday, Feb. 21, at the West Ridge Manor rec room. Instead of the group taking a bus and going to a restaurant, as was usual a few times during the year, they decided that this would be a nice change. Caterers Mary Trainer and Elizabeth Peary, of Presque Isl,e put on a great meal of seafood casserole, ham, carrots, cinnamon rolls, pickles and chocolate cake and lemon dessert. After lunch some of the members stayed and played games. Those members present were: Dottie and Duncan Beaton, Ida Doak, Lindy Fowler, Joanne Johnson, Vera Cullins, Arlene Ladner, Liana DeMerchant, Ezalee Smith, Nina Trask, Helen King, Marie Hewitt, Glenice Craig, Edith Fuller and Eldora Carter. Also taking part were the caterers, Trainer and Peary. Also dropping in for the lunch was Rec Director Hillary Trainer.
Visits
Liana and Paul DeMerchant recently returned from a trip to visit their boys. They stayed with Chris, his wife, Kayt, and children, Ethan, Jacob, and Ava, in Turner, for a couple of days and then went on to South Portland where they got storm-stayed but were able to visit with their other son, Herbert, wife, Jeanna, and sons, Dillan and Nathan.
Randy and Avery Libby and baby daughter, Ryan, of Biddeford, N.H., were recent visitors of his grandmother, Ida Doak, at her apartment in West Ridge Manor. While at Ida’s, Randy’s mother, Nancy Clark, of Mars Hill, and his sister, Rhonda Johnston, and little daughter, Abby, of Presque Isle, also joined them.
Hospitalized
Pat Scribner was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center by ambulance several days ago after a fall at her apartment in West Ridge Manor. She suffered three breaks in her pelvis and it is being decided as to where she shall go for rehabilitation.
Best wishes
Best wishes go out to Gerald and Vera Shaw who are celebrating their wedding anniversary today. We also wish Nick Flewelling a happy birthday today as well as Sean O’Mara.
Sympathy
Many of us in Easton were truly saddened by the sudden death of 56-year-old Tom Closson on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Tom, who is the husband of Debbie(Johnson) Closson and the father of Heidi Brouette of Fort Fairfield and Tammy Closson of Easton, passed away at the home of a friend in Pennsylvania. Tom had driven to Kentucky to pick up a pair of mules and a couple of horses and was on his way home when he stopped at his friend’s home in Pennsylvania for overnight. They had just come back from a restaurant where they had supper and he was checking on his animals when he suddenly passed away. Tom has had heart problems for several years but had not let it stop him from carrying on with his life. Many senior citizens enjoyed going for their Farm Share garden produce that Tom provided and they’ll miss his friendly banter. Tom was a veteran of the Viet Nam war and after returning home was a member of the National Guard. Besides his wife and two girls, he leaves: a grandson, Cody Closson, and a granddaughter, Marisa Brouette, both of Fort Fairfield; his mother, Geraldine Closson, of Skowhegan; and a sister, Brenda Collins, and family, also of Skowhegan. He also leaves two brothers and their families, Larry Closson and David Closson, both of the Skowhegan area. Our sympathy goes out to them. Tom was predeceased by his father, Russell, and a sister, Barbara. To send condolences to his wife, her address is: Debbie Closson, P.O. Box 655, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742; and his mother’s address is: Geraldine Closson, 169 Oak Pond Road, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
Another recent death that is of interest to many of Easton’s residents is that of 77-year-old Earnest (Ernie) Golder, of Veazie, who died of cancer and who was the son of Gladys and Elmer Golder. They made their home on the West Ridge Road for many years before moving to Hampden Highlands. Ernie graduated from Easton High School in 1949 and was a great athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball and track. He belonged to the Easton United Methodist Church. He attended Aroostook Normal School for one year before moving to Hampden Highlands where his parents ran a small dairy farm. He played semi-pro basketball and baseball for several leagues throughout Eastern Maine. Ernie applied for a circulation job at the Bangor Daily News and worked for them, moving from one position to another, for 40 years. He retired in 1991. He was also very active in town affairs, belonging to several organizations. He is survived by his wife, Brenda (Graves) Golder, and a son, Scott McLaughlin and his family; also sons Sterling Golder and family of Wilder, Vt.; Ronald and family, of Nobleboro; daughter, Lori Golder of Farmersville, La.; Brian Golder, of Dixmont; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home in Hampden. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery in Hampden in the spring. Donations in his memory may be made to: Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5959 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or: American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

What now? – Coach Travis Carter and Assistant Coach Randy Bacon seem to wonder while watching their team, the Easton Bears, try to penetrate the heavy zone defense of the Woodland Dragons at the beginning of the Eastern Maine Tournament in Bangor on February 16.
