SWCD announces basic GPS workshop

    HOULTON — There will be a basic introduction to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) instructional workshop on Tuesday, March 18 in Room 32 at the Houlton High School from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The workshop is part of the Southern Aroostook SWCD’s Agricultural School.  There is no fee for the workshop and pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Previous GPS experience is not necessary.  Each participant will be provided a Garmin model 72 for the workshop. The workshop will be limited to 25 participants to ensure proper instruction.
    The first half of the workshop will cover how global positioning systems work, how GPS satellites work, and how the handheld Garmin model 72 GPS unit works. After a break participants will be provided hands-on instruction including outdoor demonstrations, field work and data collection (weather permitting).  Instruction will be provided by staff from the Maine Forest Service, the Central Aroostook SWCD and Woodlot Management Services.  
    Participants will be eligible for one CLP recertification credit; 50 percent of the QLP continuing education credit requirement and tentatively, licensed foresters (LPF) may receive recertification credit hours.
