A new club is forming in the greater Houlton area.
The first meeting of the Southern Aroostook Ski Club took place in late January at the Linneus Sno-Sports Club. While the interests of the group are diverse, a common goal is to get more people on skis, either downhill at Big Rock or on the local cross-country trails. Melissa York, a coach at the Maine Winter Sports Center, is excited about the prospect of a ski club in the southern Aroostook area.
“Part of my job is to support local ski clubs,” said York. “I am especially thrilled about the start of the Southern Aroostook Ski Club since I am a local resident and would love to see more skiing in our area.”
The club is interested in working on increasing the number of cross-country ski trails in the area, getting more kids skiing after school and on the weekends, and someday starting a ski team at the high school.
Chris Anderson, club member, said, “There is a lot of excitement in the greater Houlton area for the recreational development of skiing and to take part in the ski activities that have emerged in central and northern Aroostook.”
“Our youth really enjoy learning all aspects of skiing and we hope an organized club will help promote this fantastic outdoor experience,” said Bruce Clark, another avid skier and supporting member.
During Moosestompers, Maine Winter Sports Center brought a trailer filled with skis to the Linneus Sno-Sports Club to give people a chance to ski on the wonderful trails available there. Many folks took advantage of the great snow conditions.
The club is newly forming and welcomes anyone interested in skiing to attend the next meeting Thursday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Linneus Sno-Sports Club. The club’s first big event will be a cross-country ski and bonfire, Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Linneus Sno-Sports Club. Skis will be available and all abilities/ages of skier are welcome.
