Pupils shared opinions, not facts

To the editor:
This letter is in response to your March 5, 2008, publication of the Newspapers in Education Aroostook Republican and News.     Regarding the articles written by the students of the 5th and 6th grades at the New Sweden Consolidated School, we as students would like to respond to the three articles titled “Playground Needs More Equipment,” “Student Rights Lost at Salad Bar,” and “New Gum Rules Needed.”
First of all, we were under the impression we were expressing our views to three very important aspects of our school days as viewpoints and not headline news printed on the front page of the paper. With editorials, we use persuasive writing to express our views on certain topics. As headline news, it is assumed the most important and factual news will be printed there. This was not our intention at all.
Second, we are very happy at our school and appreciate what our food service workers, janitors, and teachers do for us. We did not want anyone to have the impression we are unhappy at the New Sweden School. We simply want to let people know we all have a voice and would like to be heard.
