MADAWASKA, Maine – The Presque Isle boys’ tennis team took down Madawaska Monday, winning three of five matches.
In singles, Wildcat junior Alex Carter defeated Shawn Parker 8-0, and senior Sam Picard made the winning serve against Craig Cyr 8-2. Junior Ben Picard dropped his singles match, 8-3. In doubles, sophomore Chris Cawley and Mike Picard paired up to defeat Chris Lizotte and Jamie Cyr 8-4. Sophomores Kyle Gilson and Emerson Castro couldn’t outlast their Owl double match.
The 2008 Presque Isle boy’s tennis team plans to reach playoffs with a solid service and advancing experience of their freshmen players.
While the Wildcats have upperclassmen to fill the starting singles lineup, the young doubles players will have to step up for PIHS to repeat the 10-4 success of last season.
The usual starting lineup includes singles players Carter, B. Picard and S. Picard. The first doubles pair is Cawley and freshman Caleb Mathers. The second doubles pair is M. Picard and Bryce Fagin. Doubles substitutes for the ’08 season are Gilson and Castro.
Sixth-year tennis coach Greg Miller hopes to face Caribou with a different outcome this year. In last year’s playoffs the Wildcats beat Belfast and moved on to match with Caribou who ended their season. PIHS is ready for a rematch. The Wildcats are managed by Erika McKay.
