With the sun shinning, the wind blowing and water levels a great deal lower that two weeks previous, 59 river racing rivals joined in to compete in the 5.3-mile, 28th annual Madawaska River Race, sponsored by Stockholm American Legion Perkins-Plourde Post 136. The annual event starts at the bridge on Little Madawaska Lake, ending at the Stockholm bridge.

Following the competition, kayakers, canoeists and spectators met at the American Legion Post Home where race winners were announced and stories told.
Winning times in the various classes were:
• C-1 Men’s Recreational — Andy Coiley and Joe Bourgoine —1:10.06
• C-2 Men’s Recreational — Craig and Eric Peterson — 1:16.05
• C-3 Mixed Recreational — H.E. Towle and Carole McElwee — 1:05.42
• C-4 Boys Junior Division — River Bourgoine — 1:12.50
• C-5 Racing Mixed — Sarah Dominique and Will Sweetser — 53:16
• C-7 Women’s Recreational — Katie Michaud and Katherine Packard — 1:11.05
• K-1 Kayak — Tom Towle and Landon Towle — 1:01.25
• K-2 Kayak Men — David McCrossin — 1:03.15
• K-3 Kayak Women — Linda Callison — 1:10.15
The sun and river gods were smiling Sunday, during the 28th annual Madawaska River Run, sponsored by the American Legion Perkins-Plourde Post 136, Stockholm. Nearly 60 canoe and kayak enthusiasts participated in the 5.3-mile race which began at the bridge on Little Madawaska Lake and ended at the bridge in Stockholm. With the river overflowing its banks only two weeks earlier, the water on Sunday had dropped considerably but windy conditions helped racers, Sarah Dominique and Will Sweetser captured the fastest time overall on the river, covering the course with a time of 53:16. The pair competed in the Racing Mixed class of the event.
Carol McElwee and H.E. Towle, pictured at left, showed how it was done,coming in with the best time of 1:05.42 in the mixed recreational division of the 28th annual Madawaska River Run, sponsored by the Stockholm American Legion.
Finishing with a time 1:11.05, Katie Michaud, in front, and Katherine Packard won the Women’s Recreational class during the 28th annual Madawaska River Run held Sunday. The event is sponsored each year by the Perkins/Plourde Post of the American Legion in Stockholm.
Kayaks were the choice of many river runners during the annual Madawaska River Run.
Dave Sterris, left, had the job of registering nearly 60 canoeist and kayakers who would participate in the 28th Madawaska River Run Sunday morning. Sterris’ assistant, Joe Bither, kept the line moving by taking the entrance fees. The annual race is sponsored by the Perkins-Plourde Post 136 of the American Legion in Stockholm.
