The Little League season is off and this week’s report is as follows:
On Saturday, Savings Bank of Maine blanked Sherman, 11-0, as Ian Goetsch fired a no-hitter, striking out eight and walking two. He helped his own cause with a run-scoring double. Nick Guiod and Ryan Tribou each singled.
In the second game, Savings Bank of Maine overpowered Sherman, 23-7, as Kole Buzzeo threw four innings, fanning seven and walking three. Tribou came on in relief. The Savings Bank of Maine team exploded for 22 hits — Isaac Cone singled, tripled and homered, while Kyle Bouchard singled twice and hit a homer; Guiod singled twice and homered; Buzzeo had three singles and a homer; Goetsch singled twice and tripled; Barrett Dunn collected four singles; Jacob Condon homered; Stephen Phillips doubled and Casey Carmichael hit a pair of singles.
Last Friday in Border League action, Linneus traveled to Hodgdon for a 15-5 win behind strong pitching from Sam Horton and Tyler Sherman.
Brandon Malone belted two home runs, while Keegan Gardiner had a great defensive pick-off play at third base for Linneus.
The Oakfield team visited the Houlton Minor League team for a doubleheader.
In the opener, Oakfield got on the board in the first inning on a single by Cody Lassonde, followed by two walks and then a sacrifice by Kaleb Cullinan to bring in Lassonde.
Houlton answered back in the bottom of the frame when Ring led off with a double. Garrett Putnam and Ryan Dee followed with singles as Houlton tied the score.
From that point, the pitchers took over the game. Lassonde pitched four innings for Oakfield, giving up only the one run, while Dee pitched one-hit baseball for his four innings. In the final inning, Ring pitched a scoreless half for Houlton.
In Houlton’s last inning with two outs, Dee hit an inside-the-park home run to lift his team to a 2-1 victory.
In the second game of the double header, Houlton jumped out to a four-run lead after the first inning.
Oakfield went ahead in the second, behind big hits from Trent Cullinan and Ryan Heath, as they scored five runs to lead 6-4. Oakfield then scored six more runs in the third on hits by Cullinan and Lassonde.
In the fourth inning with Houlton down 12-4, Houlton scored four runs on hits by Ring and Ben Tuttle.
Oakfield scored twice in the fifth on a double by Lassonde for a 14-8 lead.
Houlton tried to come back in the final inning, scoring five runs on hits by Tyler Brown and Nick Cowperthwaite, but came up one run short, 14-13.
In other action, Houlton Farms Dairy edged Patten, 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Patten opened the game strong, scoring four runs, highlighted by a three-run homer by J. Woods.
Farms Dairy buckled down and held Patten scoreless with solid pitching from Jacob Drew and great defense behind him.
The game was won in the bottom of the last inning, as Patten held a 4-3 lead.
Chase Brewer started with a lead off walk, followed by a triple by Drew. Jon Tuttle singled up the middle, driving in the game-winning run.
In the second contest, Houlton Farms Dairy blanked Patten, 30-0.
Farms Dairy had multiple hits from Tuttle, Drew, Isaiah Straubel, Lucas Sewall and Cole Suitter, who also had six RBIs, as well. Rounding out the hits, Tyler Bartlett, had two singles, a double and a two-run homer. Bartlett and Tuttle combined for the shutout.
Island Falls overtook Machias Savings Bank, 10-8 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Robbie Rockwell went the distance with seven strikeouts for Island Falls, while Dylan Porter and Parker Walker each had two base hits.
For Machias Savings Bank, Alex Carr finished with three hits, while Hanning and Casillas each added hits.
In the second game, Machias Savings Bank came back with a 4-2 win, as Gage Hunt went the distance on the mound with nine strikeouts for the win.
Hanning led the offense with a base hit and a solo shot over deep center field. Lucas Grant hit a ground-rule double.
For Island Falls, Walker and Porter shared the pitching duties. Rockwell and Porter had Island Falls only hits.
The Houlton Rotary hosted the Linneus team at Community Park on Monday night. Linneus made a last-inning push scoring four runs, but Rotary held on for the win, 10-6.
Linneus got on the board first with Blake Woods and Sam Horton scoring runs. Rotary answered back with a run scored by Jacob Worthley on a triple by Parker Brewer. Rotary broke the game open in the second inning with four runs and added five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by hits by Adam Casillas and Ethan Sawyer.
Gunner Briggs and Garrett Ring pitched for Rotary and Horton and Jordyn Merritt were on the mound for Linneus.
Savings Bank of Maine topped Machias Savings Bank, 11- 8. For the Savings Bank of Maine, Cameron Clark and Bouchard shared the duties on the mound. Bouchard finished with eight strikeouts.
Bouchard, Dunn and Buzzeo all had multiple hits in the game.
For Machias Savings Bank, Hunter Hanning led the way going 4-for-4 with a solo home run and a three- run home run. Gage Hunt, Lucas Grant and Daniel Howe all had two hits.
Last Wednesday night in a matchup of the undefeated, Houlton Wal-Mart faced the Houlton Rotary Club, battling each other as well as the rain in an exciting game.
Wal-Mart scored three runs in first inning on their way to 7-3 victory.
Dallas Moore and Cameron Graham pitched their team to the win, with Moore helping his own cause by going 3-for-3 from the plate, with an inside-the-park homer and two doubles.
For Rotary, Putnam and Brewer did the pitching, while Briggs and Billy Phillips contributed with key hits.
Houlton Farms Dairy picked up an 8-3 win over Machias Savings Bank. Isaiah Straubel pitched and aided his own cause, along with Jon Tuttle, as each player had key hits.
For Machias Savings Bank, Hanning was a multiple hitter and Hunt struck out three in the sixth, as Carr did an outstanding job behind the plate in the wet conditions.
In the Katahdin Valley Little League, Sherman picked up their first win of the season by scoring five runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Patten, 6-4.
Sal Clukey and Shay Lane combined to strike out 14, while three-hitting Sherman. Clukey led Sherman with a double and a triple, while Cain Patterson and Logan Guiggey each had a base hit.
For Patten, Andrew Olson and Jerrod Woods combined to only allow four hits, while striking out 13. Olson, Mason Caron and Nick Randall reached Sherman for hits.
Action at Community Park in Houlton saw the Savings Bank of Maine hold off a late rally by Houlton Farms Dairy to pick up a 14-8 win.
Bouchard, Cone and Buzzeo shared the pitching duties for Maine Savings Bank, while Drew, Noah Holmes and Lucas Sewell all threw for Houlton Farms Dairy.
In softball action at the Airport Field, Oakfield picked up a win over Aroostook Auto Glass and Sherman defeated Patten behind the strong pitching effort of Morgan Livezey, 9-8.
