EVERY PENNY COUNTS — Through the month of May, Southside students collected pennies and other change for the purchase of phone cards for SOAR’s campaign, “Operation: So Good to Hear Your Voice.” SOAR purchases world-wide phone cards through AT&T and the Department of Defense for $27.50 each; the cards provide soldiers with 143 minutes of actual talk time to a loved one here at home. The goal is to provide one card for each soldier that the group supports. Any extra cards would be given to the troop greeters at Bangor International Airport for distribution to deploying units. Through the Southside fund-raiser, $300 was collected by the fourth, fifth and sixth graders under the guidance of student council coordinator Cindy Peterson; this money will purchase 10 phone cards. Much appreciation is extended to all those who participated in the fund drive.
