    Patten Pioneer Days 2008 started Monday, but has a very busy schedule to finish out the week.
    Today, August 6, at 1 p.m. there is a bird show at the Patten Recreation Department and at 6 p.m., it’s the Patten Pioneer Days Pageant at the recreation center.
    On Thursday, August 7, a Book Fair starts at 9 a.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Library, while from 1-2 p.m., there will be Field Day games for ages 6-11 at the Patten Ball Field (park area) and at 2:30 p.m. a Pig Scramble will be held for three age groups, 5-7; 8-11 and 12-15. The day finishes at 4:30 p.m. with a spaghetti supper at the Methodist Church.
    On Friday, August 8, a Book Fair will be held at 9 a.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Library, while at 12 p.m. hot dogs will be served at the Eastmill Federal Credit Union parking lot and from 12-1 p.m., root beer floats will be provided by Katahdin Trust Company.
    In the afternoon from 1-4 p.m., the Historical Society House will be open. At 1 p.m., the Children’s/Bike/Pet Parade will be held. Pre-registration is suggested. Parade will be held on Founders Street. This is for children 12 and under. No adults please. From 2-3:30 p.m., it’s 3-on-3 basketball for ages 10-15 at the basketball court (park area). Cost is $20 per team.
    In the evening at 5 p.m., a chicken barbecue is scheduled at Shin Pond Village, followed at 6 p.m. by Vacation Bible School closing at Patten Pentecostal Church. To conclude the day, fireworks will be set off at 9 p.m. at Shin Pond Village and a dance will be held at Shin Pond Pub.
    On Saturday, August 9 in the Patten area, a Flea Market in the park area will open at 9 a.m. with the Historical Society House open at 10 a.m.
    Also at 10 a.m., there will be a parade down Main Street, Patten. Pre-registration is suggested. The theme this year is “Pioneer Times.” At 9:30 a.m., children’s activities will take place in the parking lot area.
    A co-ed softball tournament begins at 11 a.m. at the Patten ball field for those 16 and older. Call 528-2902 for more information or to register a team. At 12 p.m., pie and ice cream will be served in the basement of the Methodist Church and from 1-3 p.m., it’s a “Guitar Hero” competition. Cost is $2 per try. All age groups and difficulty levels.
    At 5 p.m., a steak supper is being served at the KVHC parking lot/Masonic Hall, followed at 9 p.m. by a dance featuring the band “The Dogs” at the Patten Recreation Department.
    Events at the Lumberman’s Museum include a blacksmith demonstration throughout the day on Saturday, August 9, with a Craft Fair starting at 9 a.m. and the annual bean-hole-bean dinner at 11 a.m.

    At 6:30 p.m., there will be a candy drop for ages 12 and under.
    On Sunday, August 10, Mainely Sport Planes will hold a prize drop a 10 a.m. for ages 13-17.
    In the park area, the co-ed volleyball tournament for ages 16 and up will start at 1 p.m. Cost is $20.
