It was a week of ups and downs for the Fort Fairfield girls soccer team.
The Lady Tigers were blanked by Van Buren Friday by a score of 5-0, despite holding a 14-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Two days earlier, Fort used a solid second half to defeat Katahdin, 5-3.
Coach Kerrie Alley said the Van Buren game was “a frustrating one.”
“We had the shots, but just could not net one,” she added, noting the Crusaders were able to capitalize on her team’s mistakes.
Lindsay LaJoie scored four times for Van Buren, now 4-1.
In the win over Katahdin, Brooke Beaulieu notched the hat trick, while Courtney Churchill and Kaitlyn McLaughlin were the other goal scorers for Fort Fairfield.
“We came together in the second half and played a smart game,” Alley said. “Katahdin played their defense very high and we were able to chip the ball by and have a one-on-one with the goalie.
“My defense again had another strong showing.”
Fort was on the road yesterday, taking on Hodgdon, while Washburn will host the Lady Tigers Thursday at 4 p.m.
Washburn is now 4-2 after falling to undefeated Ashland in Presque Isle Friday, 3-1.
Brooke Labelle, Crystal Cook and Anna Paradis all scored goals for the 3-0 winners, while Jackie D’Ozier and Labelle both had assists.
Morgan Berube scored off a Rebecca Campbell assist for Washburn.
On Thursday, Presque Isle played its season-opener at Fort Kent and came away with an impressive 4-1 triumph.
Keying the offense were Kayla Legassie, Sarah Porter, Brittany Bearden and Elise Jones with a goal apiece. Kelsey Park was the winning goalie with six saves on 12 shots.
In boys’ play, Ashland ran its mark to 3-0 with a 5-0 win over Washburn
The Hornets scored four of their goals in the first half, with Jake Paradis, Kenny Tarr and Jeremy Tarr all tallying within seven minutes of each other. The one by Paradis went in directly off a corner kick, the second time this season he’s been able to pull off that feat.
Paradis and Jeremy Tarr each added second goals later in the game, while Paradis had two assists and Kenny Tarr another.
“Our defense is improving,” said Ashland coach Kevin Paradis. “That is a good thing because I don’t think we’ll be able to match last year’s offensive production.”
Bobby Gardiner earned his first career shutout in goal for Ashland.
Also on Friday, Central Aroostook edged Wisdom, 3-2, on a late goal by Zach Stetson, while Josh Booth scored three times in Fort Fairfield’s 5-1 win over Van Buren. Easton lost for the first time this season, 3-1 at Southern Aroostook.
