Wildcat players of the week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Ethan Braley and Kayla Legassie for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of Dec. 1-6. Braley scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the boys varsity basketball team to an overtime victory over Old Town. Legassie had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals to help the girls varsity basketball team past Old Town.
And for the week of Nov. 17-29, athletes Brennen Shaw and Chelsea Nickerson were selected.
Shaw scored 5 goals and had 5 assists including a hat trick against Bangor to lead the varsity hockey team at the John Bapst Holiday Face-Off Pre-Season Ice Hockey Tournament.
Nickerson scored 18 points for the girls varsity basketball team during the 6th annual Tip-Off Classic Pre-Season Basketball Tournament.
UMPI hosts three-day baseball clinic for kids
The men’s baseball team at the University of Maine at Presque Isle is hosting a three-day baseball clinic for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 Dec. 29 – 31 at the university’s Wieden Hall.
The clinic, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, will feature instruction in basic skills including form throwing, hitting, base running, and fielding of both ground ball and fly balls.
The day’s events will conclude with an actual indoor modified baseball game. Cost for the entire clinic is $60 per participant, with proceeds used to support travel expenses for the UMPI baseball team.

North Star basketball camp
The weekend of Dec. 29-31, 2008 UMPI will host a basketball camp in Wieden Gymnasium.
The camp, will be led by women’s head coach Tracy Guerrette and men’s head coach Terry Cummings, and is co-ed. Grades 2-5 will play from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and grades 6-8 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost of the camp is $40. For more information, please contact Bill Casavant at 768-9475 or 764-0810.
Presque Isle youth hockey
The Presque Isle Youth Hockey Novice team outscored Plaster Rock 6-3 for their second win of the season.
Heinz Schumacher faced 36 shots, and Presque Isle had 20 shots on Plaster Rock. Jake Stevens scored three of the six goals for his first career hat trick.
Thomas Patenaude put in two, and Torey Levesque got his first goal of the season.
Patenaude, Amelia Theriault, Eric Benson, Devin Ireland, Kyra Schumacher and Bailey York all had assists. The team plays Houlton on Saturday at the Presque Isle Forum. Game time is 5 p.m.
UMPI athlete nominated as co-player of the week
Sophomore guard Morgan Korhonen was selected as co-player of the week by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Korhonen, from Littleton, played an oustanding game for the Lady Owls against Husson. Though the Owls lost, Korhonen had 25 points, with 8 assists. She also grabbed 8 boardsand was 15 for 16 from the free throw line.
Korhonen competes with athletes from all over Maine.
Correction
In last week’s issue of the Star Herald, the Washburn fall awards appeared. A list of freshmen girls soccer players was omitted. They are: Angie Hernandez, Kelsey Churchill, Marlaina Spooner, Brianna Hyde and Kristi Sperrey. All girls received their first letter.
