Last weekend was such a huge success. We adopted out 17 cats and one dog at our first ever Hills Science Open House and Adoptathon. We would like to thank everyone who came and toured the shelter as well as everyone who adopted. Because of all of you, this many more animals are in their new forever homes, loved and feeling so happy.

VINNY — This dog is looking for a good home. Are you looking for a good pet? Contact the Houlton Humane Society if you would like to bring this Pit Bull/Boxer mix home to your house.
I have to say, though, there were two animals I was hoping would find their new family, but they were not so lucky. So maybe their new family could not make it out on Saturday, but they are reading this right now. So let me tell you about these two special pets.
First there’s Reggie the cat. Reggie is about three years old. He has been with us for so long, he now thinks the shelter is his home. That alone breaks my heart. Now Reggie may come across as “snarky” to some, but that’s just his independent disposition. Reggie is a loner, so he would be good in a no cat home. He wants all of your attention for himself. He is a handsome man, an orange tabby with a very cute face. If you’ve been to the shelter recently, he’s the big guy usually occupying the couch. I personally think he would be happier on your couch.
Now this next one I know everyone has heard me talk about a lot this past year. Vinny is a special dog who has sadly been with us for almost 16 months. He’s kind of become a permanent resident of the shelter, so he thinks, but all of us can’t help but think or should I say hope, that there’s a special someone perfect for Vinny. He is a two and a half year old Pit Bull/Boxer mix. He has some trust issues, which make him very nervous around a lot of people. But I can tell you from personal experience that once Vinny trusts you, he trusts you forever.
I will admit, he is a hard dog to figure out, but once you do, the love is so evident in his eyes. He is good with cats. He is around them a lot at the shelter. He does well with small dogs. Vinny likes to be the “big dog” and feel like he is in control of the situation. He also plays great with puppies. He has a playful side. He has a huge heart, you just have to work with him to see it. I know in my heart that Vinny has a special someone with just the right qualities out there somewhere. I am hoping that someone is reading this right now and will come out and meet this special boy.
We have so many loving pets looking for homes. These two just seem like they have been with us for so long. They tear at my heart every time I see them. I know they have so much to offer, so please come meet them. See them the way I see them and I promise you will love what you see.

DONATION – On January 18, Hannah Gervais celebrated her 12th birthday with a party for her friends at the Temple Movie Theatre. They enjoyed pizza, cake, ice cream and watching the movie “Hotel For Dogs.” Gervais asked her friends to bring a donation for the Houlton Humane Society instead of birthday presents for her. Gervais is pictured with the family cat Milo surveying the generous donations, including $50 cash, which was then delivered to the Humane Society. Milo said his pals at the shelter could have the toys and yummies, just send his girl back … Gervais said it was her “best birthday party ever.”
