CARIBOU – “Caribou, Maine, the First 150 Years: A celebration of the people, food and events that shaped our community,” is a historical book project offering an opportunity to a peephole into Caribou’s past. The book relates, in ten 15-year segments the history of Caribou over 150 years. The volume is being authored by 10 Caribou citizens who each researched a 15-year period and wrote a chapter highlighting the events which occurred during that time frame.
Caribou’s population has always included a host of ethnic backgrounds, therefore creating a wealth of cuisine variation. Old traditional family recipes gleaned from previous historical cookbooks, developed during past celebrations, will also appear within the pages of the 150 years of Caribou history. Caribou Sesquicentennial committee members are also seeking to feature Caribou residents who have made a positive difference in Caribou’s history. As a fund-raiser to help defray the cost of publishing this historical account, the committee is now accepting applications through it’s website at www.celebratecaribou.com from anyone wishing to submit the name of any such resident or family, current or from the past. The cost of sponsoring an individual is $100.
Those wishing to sponsor a Caribou resident to be featured within the book, are asked to submit, in his/her own writing, how this individual made their mark in Caribou’s history. The committee also asks that a photo be provided of the featured subject to be printed with the biography. The cost of sponsoring an individual is $100. Also anyone wishing to highlight their own contribution to the city is welcomed to do so, following the same guidelines.
The deadline for submissions of photos and applications regarding people who have made a difference is February 15.
To attain an application or for more information go to www.celebratecaribou.com.
The 150th committee members are also presently encouraging anyone who may have unique historical photos to contact David Sleeper at 498-8181, in the near future.
