Bad weather — On account of the recent storms it has been almost impossible for the women to call on their neighbors. But the people that take the conditions of the roads at heart the most is the singing school class as each one of the class is beginning to think that they will have to have their voices tested over again if Mr. Tromble does not soon make his appearance.
Entertains — The Fact and Fiction Club sponsored Gentlemen’s Night at the Unitarian parlors and dining hall. The rooms, which are so well suited for an occasion of this kind were decorated by the Club and Chadwick, the florist, with evergreens, similax and carnations. After an informal reception in the parlors members and guests numbering about 80, marched to the dining room to the strains of Bryson’s Orchestra, which were concealed in an alcove adjoining the dining room.

Houlton — The Shiretown Lassies, defending basketball county champions, defeated a hard passing girls’ team from Presque Isle for their fifth straight win in league competition.
Hodgdon — The Wednesday afternoon Chapel program was presented by the sophomore class. It consisted of songs, a Bible reading and prayer by Ervin Putnam, song and piano solo by Irma Corson and a reading by Carrie Nickerson.
To entertain — Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Gentle, Callaghan Road are entertaining tonight at a private dancing party and social at Legion Hall, the occasion being in honor of the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Herbert Gentle. Gentle’s orchestra will furnish the music for the dancing and a large decorated birthday cake will be a feature of the refreshments.

Local schools — At a recent school board meeting it was reported that the Houlton schools are becoming obsolete. Suggestions are being made by consultants to bring the system up to modern standards.
Ice cutters — Two ice sawyers were hauled safely from the frigid waters of Nickerson Lake when they toppled into the depths while operating ice-cutting machinery. Maynard Patchell and Wendell Holmes were reported in good condition following their rescue.
Ice blocks — More than 7,000 tons of ice have been cut from Nickerson Lake this month and are being stored at the Horseback pit for icing of cars by the B&A railroad in the summer.
Rainbow Girls — Miss Beverly Hurd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hurd of Bowdoin Street, was installed Worthy Advisor of Houlton Assembly No. 26 Rainbow Girls at a semi-public installation at Masonic Hall.
VFW — Mrs. Molly Brown, president, conducted the business session of the VFW Auxiliary, which met Tuesday. Matters discussed were the sliding and skating party held recently, a three-act play performance and a public supper.

Smiley-Sneezy — Malee Putnam and Karen Gallop, members of the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary, are making plans for their annual visit to the kindergarten classes in area schools. They will tell the children about a first visit to a hospital and what the child may expect.
Ivey’s — Ivey’s Restaurant and Motel located on Bangor Street employs between 30 and 35 local residents. It is a 45unit motel and has a restaurant seating capacity of 300. Some of the current employees are: Gary Shaw, restaurant manager; Blanche Cyr, hostess; Kevin Bailey, Butch Benn, Cheryl Donahue, Suzanne Clement, Jean Sloat, Jody Davis, Lisa Jipson and Robin Anderson.
Honored — Henry and Cecile McBride of Littleton were honored by the Littleton Baptist Church for their service as treasurer for 45 years.
Hodgdon — Outstanding students for Hodgdon High for January are: Tim Howell, Shelly Jones, Susan Pelletier and Dawn Jacobs.
