Mars Hill ladies prepare for Winterfest Food Sale

United Methodist Women
The February meeting of the Mars Hill United Methodist Women met in the church vestry at 12 p.m. on Feb. 9, with 10 members present. After the blessing, the members ate their sandwiches, which each had brought from home, and enjoyed chips, drinks and desserts prepared by the co-hostesses Donna Brewer and Cindy Anderson.

After an hour of socializing, new President Elaine Bailey conducted the business meeting. She opened by leading all in the Purpose Pledge and Prayer. Four thank you notes were received for donations by the UMW.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. The Meals on Wheels service in the Mars Hill area has been added to the regular designated Missions giving, with 19 area residents being served by the service. The prayer chain list was updated and new copies were distributed.
A change was made, and instead of responding to a Bible verse or a special word each meeting, the new president suggested we respond by doing a neighborly visit or by helping someone less fortunate.
Donna Brewer will be in change of investigating new round tables for the vestry. Donna and her committee will also be organizing the upcoming UMW Food Sale at the Winterfest activities on March 13 and 14.
The meeting was turned over to Diane Ketchum, who presented her program on “Pledge and Budget.” At a meeting in her home recently, Diane and her Committee met and prepared a proposed budget for 2009. She presented each one with a copy and the rest of the meeting was spent discussing and making corrections. Each one made a donation pledge, which goes to the UMW Northern District treasurer, which is eventually used for global missions. It was voted to accept the proposed budget for 2009.
After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Those attending were: Elaine Bailey, Frances Banks, Janice Footer, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Diane Ketchum, Cindy Anderson, Ruth Sylvester and Clara Hussey.

The special speaker was Ryan Guerrette. Ryan is the athletic director at CAHS, works at Big Rock and is the UMPI golf coach.
The UMPI Golf team has 12 members. There were six players that competed in 10 matches, which are two-day events. The team is in NAIA District 3 and won the division this year. Ryan was also named Conference Coach of the Year.
The CAHS AD job is a busy one. He sets the schedules for all the sporting action. This year’s teams have done well. The CAHS Varsity Cheerleaders won the State Class D title for the second year in a row. The Varsity Boys Basketball Team is going into the Eastern Maine Tournament in second place and the Girls Basketball Team’s in fourth place. Varsity Boys player Manny Martinez became a member of the 1,000 point club. The Junior High Cheerleaders won the local small school competition. The CAHS Ski Team came in second in the county Alpine competition.
Big Rock has had good skiing this year. The “Ski for Free” Wednesday night promotion is a great success with 400 to 500 skiers out each Wednesday. Big Rock is thankful to Milton and Scott Adelman for their contribution of used ski equipment, which would have been worth around $40,000 when new. The equipment is being sold to raise money for the Youth Race Program and to date has brought in over $5,000. Thank you, Milt and Scott. A special thank-you also goes to Sargent and Tweedie for providing transportation from Utah to bring the equipment to Maine. There was over half a truckload of skis, boots and clothing.
