The first Lenten breakfast was served at the Whittier Congregational Church on March 1. Coordinating the breakfast was Patti Hartin, assisted by her husband Ted, Pastor and Mrs. John Stevens, the great bacon cook, Sam and serving was Marion Hoar.
The menu consisted of Patti’s famous baked apple French toast, homemade bread toasted, bacon, sausage, eggs, coffee, tea and orange juice.
A large crowd enjoyed the breakfast with many snowmobilers that had arrived for the sled races held on Saturday.
A great time of fellowship was enjoyed by everyone and many are planning to return for the next breakfast.
We have just received word that Virginia Mooers, a former resident of Island Falls, is now a permanent resident of a nursing home in Virginia following a recent heart attack. Her daughter, Kathy, says that cards and letters would really be appreciated and the address of the nursing home is at the library for those who remember, Ginny and would like to send a note.
I am now home in the County and very happy about the whole thing. I stayed in Concord, New Hampshire for two months and really enjoyed visiting with nieces, great nieces and my sister, but it is always wonderful to be back in my own environment and with my friends.
Today on my walk back to the house after retrieving my paper, I spotted deer tracks in front of the house. I was really pleased, as I had seen no sign of the deer for a very long time. I immediately took out some food and left it by the barn; the direction the tracks went. So, if I am lucky, I may have those critters where I can see them.
I still have lots of birds. The woodpeckers have increased to four or five and really make short work of the peanut butter and lard mixture. I saw two nuthatches feeding and of course, lots of chickadees.
