Canoe race raises more than $2,500 for scholars

    The Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race was held on Saturday, May 2 in memory of former high school principal Elwood Scott. The event was organized by the local chapter of Dollars for Scholars.

     The race made more than $2,500 for Houlton/Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars, as 144 paddlers in 83 boats participated in the annual event.
    The largest class was the high school division, said organizer Peter Blood.
    “It was the largest for all races so far, even Bangor,” he said.
    Bob Martin won the 50/50 drawing of $74, while Frank Bell won the $100 North Maine Wood gift certificate. Blood said there were more than 44 other door prize winners, as well.
ImageA LITTLE WET – Paul Hemingway came in second in the K-1 Long divison with a time of  1:31:37.
    The high school traveling trophy went to East Grand’s Nick Malone and John Massey. The fastest Houlton/Hodgdon team was Porter Gervais and James Bates of Houlton, who received $10 each and a Pizza Hut pizza.
